Well-judged tempi, good recording, the scholarship you'd expect from Mr Hurford, allied to imaginatively chosen registration. The C Minor Passacaglia & Fugue are particularly good - I've been looking for a sensitive recording of this for ages after dismissing a lot of ponderous versions which start off with the big guns already blazing!

If you love Tchaikovsky (you'll already have this), ballet or classical music his is for you. Lots of well known tunes and some lesser known ones that are just as good. A good quality recording too. Top quality.

This album is absolutely fantastic and you actually feel what is happening in the fairy tale. The problem is that people do not know that Elena Kats-Chernin composed this music for a ballet "The Wild Swans" and every piece of music relates to something in the fairy tale. Eliza Aria (the music on the Lloyds advert is the piece composed about the Princess) who was turned mute after a spell was cast upon her by her wicked Stepmother. In a faraway kingdom, there lives a King with his twelve children: eleven princes and one princess. One day, he decides to remarry. He marries a wicked Queen who is actually a witch. I first bought this Elijah set on old LP records in my first year at university and it positively blew me away. Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau comes booming in as the prophet right from the outset and the power of his characterisation of this greatest of the Old Testament prophets holds up for the full duration of the recording. The other thing I liked about this version of the oratorio is the all round clarity of the diction. All of the soloists excel here and the choir is likewise very good even in some of those chorus numbers when there is an awful lot going on both vocally and with the orchestra. The price for this album is an absolute snip, so why pay more when this recording will clearly continue to give value for years to come.

This is one of the double CDs I bought after recently having had the memorable experience of attending an inspirational recital given by the Tallis Scholars in Beverley Minster. It delivers everything that I had hoped...and more! Definitely one to add to your collection!

I only really came to appreciate Sibelius in the last couple of years, travelling through time from Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms; I'm glad to have taken the trouble. Although I find something a little sterile about some aspects of the performances of some parts of this bargain box, I guess that Sir Colin Davis is allowed to relax a little on this umpteenth traversal of Sibelius's orchestral music. The RCA sound quality is just fine and I agree with the other reviewers that this set would make a great choice for Sibelius beginners; it certainly proved to be so for me!

in hopes of roping in us 'dumb American consumers' with the 'hot chicks' CD cover. The music is excellent and the front (UK) cover magical. And, until they stop putting "EXPLICIT LYRICS!" warnings in as part of a cd's cover art, instead of removable stickers, (or better yet, none at all) I will buy my CDs from Amazon.UK. the prices usually are about the same, and it can take only THREE DAYS from when I put an the order, to when it arrives (I live in Seattle. Ironic-this is where Amazon started) Oh, and then on every back cover and some label art contain an idiotic FBI warning. I was very disappointed to find that Virgin/Veritas have not included the very full and interesting 68 page booklet, containing the libretto, essays and notes, which came with the original EMI publication.
