The Ink Spots were one of the most popular vocal groups of the forties. There were no record sales charts in Britain back then so I don't know which of their songs were most popular in the UK, but a look at the American charts shows that this collection omits several big hits. Nevertheless, many others are included and all the tracks here are worth hearing, so I don't mind - this is, after all, a budget collection. The sound quality, while not perfect, is fine given the age of the recordings.

Here you will find the original version of Whispering grass, which became a British number one hit in the seventies when covered by TV actors Windsor Davis and Don Estelle. Another song that got a new lease of life via a cover is My prayer, ... Read More:

Excellent CD & DVD package from Tyner's own Half Note / McCoy Tyner music label with hours of listening and viewing pleasure. The CD is based around the McCoy Tyner trio which consists of himself,Ron carter and Jack DeJohnette with five guitarists guesting on 2, 3 or 4 tracks each. The contrasting style of the guitarists make for a very interesting listen indeed.
First up is Marc Ribot with a very rock/fusion'sh sound which, i must admit doesn't quite sound right with the piano trio but he does solo well though.John Scofield is next and fits in perfectly in my opinion with a great swinging version of "Mr PC" (one of the picks of the album) and a time honoured rendition of "Blues on the corner".Shame he didn't stick around for an extra ... Not a bad mix of jazz and pop-music; something like a modernized Frank Sinatra, but with a more emotion in the voice and a bit more variety in arrangements (not better than Sinatra-only different).

The choice of songs is excellent and this is really highly recomended music for romantic evenings or as background for a dinner-party. I would personally prefer a bit more spice and swing, but this is still nice.

Rock Swings is the first of two albums by Paul Anka. The man who famously penned "My Way" covers some contempory songs "his way" in a swing/big band manner. If your a lover of differing cover versions of songs you love, then is is one for the eclectic collection. Do check out the second album Classic Songs: My Way and enjoy.

...........but somehow I got to hear this album in the early/mid nighties - possibly through Guru's association with the jazz guitarist Ronny Jordan who features on this disc. Jazzmatazz vol.1 and the subsequent Jazzmatazz albums seem to elevate themselves out of the regular bitching of rap and hip hop through some excellent songs with great song structure, melodies and variety. Whether this is due to Guru, who it has to be said is really 'into himself' as demonstrated by a number of self penned narratives on how good he is on both this and other jazzmatazz albums or whether it is some of the exceelent contributors that appear throughout the record. Either way he desreves credit for either creating or facilitating a number of tremendous records.

This is a cracking album and I totally agree with the other reviewer as this is a disc that is frequently in my CD player.
Although my preference would be for the other Blue Note recorded in Paris with Kenny Clarke and Bud Powell, this is a hugely enjoyable set, Dexter playing with his customary wry sense of humour and backed by a hard-hitting rythmn section. Like many other discs of the era on the Blue Note label, the recording quality is good and the standard of material is very high. No duff tracks on this one.
Dexter's style of playing with his huge, impressive tone was unique - owing something to the more Romantic players of the generation of Coleman Hawkins but taking on the harmonies and rythmns of Be-bop. This is a good introduction to one ... Read More:

There is no denying that Brad Mehldau is one of the most instantly recognisable jazz performers out there. Just a handful of notes - that sharp touch, the detached articulation in the right, the jabbed clusters in the left, the two-handed play and the moments his left wants to detach from his right - and you just know it is him at the piano.

Mehldau's playing has some real strengths. His ability to take a melody apart and put it back together again is in ample evidence on this live set from the celebrated Village Vanguard. It can be heard on standards such as 'The Very Thought of You' or 'More Than You Know': the themes will be familiar but chances are you will not have heard theme quite like this. And Brad deconstructs his own themes (the infectious ... Read More:

This is simply an astonishing record that demonstrates the exceptional levels of communication that four people can achieve. Yes it's jazz, but not as you know it and you will find the hairs on the back of your neck standing up over and again and the music expresses thoughts you never thought you could have. After 45 minutes of the most intense power, the set is topped off by "Peace Piece", a moment of sublime beauty with just one classical guitar.

This is the sort of music that makes you priveleged to be a member of the human race.

'Amazing' is the only word for Andy McKee's playing. The only other modern guitarist who comes to mind with his level of skill and ability to create whole soundscapes of magic and mystery is that of the late and much-missed Michael Hedges. Unfortunately, Amazon do not provide sound samples - but that's no problem. Search for Andy by name in Youtube and you will find a huge number of high quality recordings of him playing .... so you can hear him and also see how he does what he does. Stunning.
