Of the 27 tracks on offer here a minimum of 11 are covers and some of the originals are from way back ie Grover Washington and Earl Klugh before the term Smooth Jazz had been dreamt up. Dont get me wrong you get great musicians here and side one showcases some of the very best including Boney James, Rick Braun, Pieces of a Dream, Fourplay and the Rippingtons, where the CD falls down is side two where 10 0f the 13 tracks are from 1980 and before and would have probably fallen into the Jazz Funk category. If you are looking to try a smooth jazz album I would recommend hunting down old Jazz FM compliations which are going very cheap on this site eg 101 Eastbound a penny, a bargain with more upto date artists. unlike some remixes this has been done very well. I played Romantic Warrior to death when first out on vinyl but it has been given a fresh lease of life with this release. If you liked RTF first time round do yourself a favour and get this.

Generally very COOL mix of funky, jazzy, bossa-nova-ish, X-mas songs. Makes for a great excuse to jump around and shake your stuff - go on burn those mince pies!!!!

Gordon Goodwin has assembled a group of truly world class musicians, in technical ability, in their ability to blend with each other to form the glorious sounds on this album and in their ability to just SWING!! This is their best release since 'Swingin' For The Fences' and is anything but background music - from the opening number, this music grabs you and refuses to let go. Forget toe-tapping, it'll have you dancing around your home like some kind of maniac. Where Goodwin's band comes alive is in the sheer energy they put into each track - even the slower numbers have a tangible electricity to them. When you're tired of just "the best of" and don't want to go to the trouble to collect the complete Glenn Miller, this is about the best collection on the market. I'm still surprised to find items like the childish "Booglie-Wooglie Piggy" or "the Kiss Polka" included in the set ("Sweeter than the Sweetest" and "At the President's Birthday Ball" come to mind as musically better alternatives), but all in all there's a good balance between the swinging Mr. Miller and the more commercial things he waxed. I still find it incomprehensible that Miller employed such mediocre singers (Marion Hutton and Ray Eberle), who are only palatable when they are singing together with The Modernaires, and therefore I find it a pity that the 1937-1938 Decca and Brunswick ... This excellent value CD is a must - it's got most of his hits, and the other tracks are all standards which Fame interprets in his own accomplished way with character and empathy. And it's also a great demonstration of why the pop music of the sixties was so brilliant - an era when artists of Georgie's calibre were taking their inspiration from jazz and blues and, in turn, inspiring so many others. I love it. The price of this Fame album is ludicrously cheap and there's really very little excuse for not including it in your collection.

Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall Concert was a major event, not least for the prestigious nature of the venue, but it was recorded almost as an afterthought, and first saw the light of day over a decade later. It was reissued by Avid in their Gold Remasters series, and is now repackaged as part of a 4-CD set, with a total running time of over 5 hours. The quality of the remastering is quite superb, with a degree of clarity and a spacious acoustic which makes prolonged listening effortless. Hearing these performances again, I was struck by the sense of occasion that is conveyed by the presence of the very appreciative audience. Apparantly this concert had sound difficulties for the players and it was very hot. In true professional manner they pulled off an amazing concert. We have come to expect a very very high standard from this trio. Encapsulated in here is a mini history of jazz piano with nods at Fats Waller, Thelonius Monk and Bill Evans, maybe even Bud Powell and Art tatum. The few standards that have been done before on other trio albums are given different treatments here so don't bring any pre conceptions here, they work well in these newer workings. The stride like piano pieces alla fats waller are fun and show these guys can do it straight too and still make their own inimitable mark on the music.
