Although Diana Krall might not be first choice for the best jazz singer in the world she still manages to drip her lyrics like honey over the already sumptuous arrangements in this collection of standards. Her vocals are at once languid and precise, distant and intense and when added to the bittersweet, fully orchestral back-ups, it all comes together in a most intoxicating way. A definite grower; for the impatient listener a first take might be their last but with subsequent plays, the nuances blossom until you realise that you are hearing something rather special.

i brought this cd home from the library the other day being a pat metheny fan i just find the cd boring the only track worth playing again is, is this america.i must also say that the way up cd was not in the same league as speaking of now.

Anyone familiar with LOTW and their sound will want to snap up this classic album - it is undoubtedly one the best soul/funk albums Britain has ever produced and certainly worth more than the modest asking price. However, it is unfortunate that EMI's reissue team have once again let themselves down with a flat, rough-sounding transfer that doesn't do justice to Augie Johnson's crisp upfront production. Interesting as it is to hear LOTW/Beggar & Co/Funk Jazz Collective's poorly recorded recent live recordings included here as bonus tracks, it surely would have been better to include the blistering original 12" mixes. Im amazed at how cheap these albums are as the musicianship and technical skill are so impressive. Grant Green's guitar with the vibraphone works beautifully tonally and melodically. An album for a jazz fan.

... Because Sony has removed it. Only the cds come into de the pocket, with their original LP Covers, very well packaged. The only pain is that "The Lost Trident Sessions", a post-humous album available separately, has not been included. The whole set is remarkable and a document of jazz-rock fussion second to none.

Susannah knew a lot about popular music, not just the Great American Songbook which are the mainstay of her recordings, but also songs of more recent origin. Although this is not one of her thematic albums, it is yet another brilliant masterpiece, including covers of everything from Bessie Smith (My sweetie went away) and Ethel Waters (Thief in the night) to Paul Simon (Still crazy after all these years). Susannah also does great covers of That ole devil called love, a Billie Holliday classic, and The lady is a tramp. Susannah was particularly good at putting her own interpretation on old classics. It's a classic for a reason and a great introduction to Miles Davis and jazz in general. Lower the lights, open a bottle of red wine and put this on, it's what jazz is all about!

Diana Krall has been my favorite way to introduce "non jazz lovers" to the genre. Her mellow voice and piano playing style seem to please most everyone. But this record alone (My favorite by far from her), has been responsible for most of the "conversions" to the jazz cause. Specially through "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". A great, great album by any standards. A "must have" to any music lover. A great tribute to one of the best Piano Player/voices in music history - Nat King Cole.
