I have just read David Garcia's book "Arsenio Rodríguez: and the transnational flows of Latin Popular music". Luckily, there are now a few original recordings available of this son montuno style master. He was copied by many of the younger salsa performers, like Johnny Pacheco and many others, but was often barred from performing on the major stages. Racism, his own lack of adaptation to the big town up beat tastes, and for other reasons, Rodriguez was forgotten by many.
Mirabal's record consists only of Rodriguez' music, which is more subtle, intricate, and challenges the dancers to feel the music, not only the beat of the drums. Read the book, listen to Mirabal, and then go to the source!

If you love smooth jazz with all danger and surprise removed then you might go for this. If you are hoping to find Benson at the top of his game as a serious guitarist then give it a wide birth. Ditto with all other musicians here.

This CD is full of top-drawer talent but the problem is that they are all so very restrained and rehearsed and the result is low fat sweet cheese. YUK!

Al hardly sings a song on it and mostly just scats rhythmic ideas that sometimes sound like an old man running for a bus. Definitely out-sung by Benson here.

George is always great on a guitar, but again this is the super smooth George and lacks any real soul and conviction. (wish I could play like him though).

This was the first Coltrane record I bought after seeing it offer. Well being called 'The Very Best of' I was expecting too much, but this isn't just hyperbole. A great selection of tracks and really stand out performances too (best version of 'My Favorite Things' I've heard).

Certainly a great introduction to the trane, highly accessible. I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur of the genre, by any stretch, but I imagine this would be a worth while purchase to the more seasoned listeners too.

It's great to hear SDJ in full flow on this compilation,..most of his well known songs are here, personally I wish they'd included, 'The Rhythmn of Life' but everyone has a favourite omitted from a compilation album I'm sure,..this is as good as you can get if you admire the snappy, jazzy, finger-clicking legendary showman's style. The 'live' numbers are particularly effective, which of course is where he was at his most magnetic. My favourite here has to be the 'Me and my shadow' duet with Frank Sinatra. .. Now this isn't a criticism, but one interesting vocal idiosyncracy I've only just noted is Mr Davis's pronunciation of the letter 'D'.,..he doesn't do them!,..it's most noticable in 'If I ruled the World',..which in his hands becomes 'If I ... On John Surman and Christopher Laurence's Coruscating, sax, bass and classical strings swoop clear and free as October skies - with no kitsch in sight this is Millennial music for our isle full of noises. Lacking the sometimes overbearing, older sister gravitas of Jan Garbarek's Officium project, and with no hint of minimalistic make-do (the music is too generous for that) there is a shy smile loose in these tunes that sounds wonderfully like the freedom for happy and sad thoughts to mingle in the smoke and the spray, not quite able to tell one another apart.

The reviews below are, IMO, pretty churlish for what is one of the great live albums of all time, in -any- genre.

The original 'Ellington at Newport' LP consisted of the legendary Diminuendo/Crescendo In Blue performance (of which more in a bit), plus some re-recorded stuff with overdubbed applause, a shoddy and largely faked document of what was reportedly one of the stonkingest live gigs in history. The Columbia team have hunted down the original tapes and reconstructed the entire concert, bum notes and all. (The bum notes were the reason why Columbia insisted on Ellington rerecording a lot of the stuff in the studio a few days later. This CD includes the re-recordings, but restores the original performances, so nobody feels ... Read More:

I love jazz guitar and know that Kessel is rated as one of the best and so bought this album with high expectations, however, the overall feel of these recordings is of bland 50s West Coast jazz. The music never asserts itself, and even though Kessel's technique can't be faulted, to my ears it's just plain boring - safe, unassuming arrangements of (mostly) standards - something that might have accompanied suburban cocktail parties of the time as background music. If you know what you are getting and like this kind of music then this compilation represents good value for money, but I don't suppose that many modern jazz guitar fans will appreciate it.

Wonderful - back to 1972 with two of Stomu Yamshta's finest works - at long last on CD. If you love the Jazz-rock of that era (with a little Oriental flavouring) give this a go - on a par with Nucleus, Soft Machine, Isotope and others of the Ilk. And as a SPECIAL TREAT (for me!) there are even two tracks from Freedom is Frightening (Please can we have the rest of that LP on CD. Pretty Please!).
