This whole DVD is a joy! Even though you may think, as I do, that the "real" original Oscar Peterson Trio consists of OP, Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen this recording is no less great - on the contrary.
Oscar Peterson's immense drive backed by Martin Drew's fine drumming and rhythm and NHOP's equilibristic swinging bassplaying form a synthesis. Just listen to and enjoy NHOP's playing on "Nigerian marketplace".
This is a 5 star + recording - do yourself a favour and buy it.

A great band and the well balanced mono sound is superb, as you would expect of Basie at his prime. Better than the original discs, my wife even likes this big band sound! (as does the parrot!) Much of it has unfamiliar titles but very familiar tunes, the Basie we hear all the time on the radio of course! A class act but then all the bands that survived to the late 50's and beyond had that in common (compare with Kenton at the Tropicana, the Herman 1963 Philips disc etc). Buy it!

Up until recently I used to have a time on a Monday afternoon where I had to sit down, concentrate and get on with some paper work. This was often my cd of choice. Instead of being in my office at work I was transported to a jazz bar in New York, relaxing and enjoying myself. That was my happy place, to help me get through the paper work. Soon people were asking me if they could borrow this cd because they also found it to be the musical version of someone stroking your head.

This performance of Rachmaninov's second symphony made quite a stir when it was released on vinyl back in 1973 and although that may seem like a generation ago (because it is, sadly!), this newly (1999) re-mastered version succeeds in recapturing the excitement which its original release created. Prior to this recording, Previn and the LSO had toured with the symphony to Russia, where the unexpurgated version had not been heard for years, and it caused a sensation. Listening to this recording, it is not hard to understand why. This is unashamedly beautiful and lyrical music, played by an orchestra and conductor who had no misgivings about whether the music was fashionable or not, and given its full measure of feeling, with great drama and ... If you're searching for pure trio Jazz, EST may not be what you're looking for. There are no gigantic solo's or battling ego's going on, most of the time it's the great sound of good ensemble-playing and in that there are no passengers in this trio. Dan Berglund is a lyrical, steady bass-player, Magnus Ostrum is a fast and subtle drummer and Esbjorn Svensson seems to mix a classical style of playing with parts of Bill Evans and Chick Corea. And, of course, there's the use of distorting filters, synths and effect pedals.
EST doesn't seem to find the balance here yet between the traditional and 'modern' stuff (their next two cd are just right in that respect), but the melodies and lyricism are ... Read More:

I have been waiting for this on CD since 1973 (or whenever they introduced CDs) and now those Wonderful people at Esoteric Recordings have delivered the goods... Bringing together the talents of Garry Boyle from Isotope and the extraordinary Hugh Hopper (Soft Machine) with his trade mark fuzzed bass, Stomu Yamash'ta delivers an album of stunning exhilaration! Of course the percussives are amazing, but then we have the beauty of Hisako's violin - evoking Japanese landscapes with skeletal pines and flowing reeds. And then there is "Rolling Nuns" - a roaring, soaring, grooving steam-train of a track...
Excuse me, I must just go and press the replay button... Bliss!

I have loved this album since it was released. It is sounds strange the first time it is heard. If you like it will become part of your life and part of your soul.

I saw the Penguin Cafe Orchestra play at Islington Union Chapel in 2007 when they played three concerts. It was one of the most astounding concerts I have seen. The atmosphere was electric with excitement that was shared by both the audience and the players alike.

The music was, apparently, created by Penguin Cafe's founding member so that he and his friends could meet and share a common interest. Not many works are created for nine musicians from very different disciplines; two violins, a cello, a saxophone, an oboe, pianist and trash percussion. The ... Read More:
