I'm sure anything I say will not dim the future career of Miss Ross, but this album is not worth your money or your attention. Many of the songs are tired and over-done. A friend of mine insisted I listened to it - so I did - but it was a lame effort to shove together a cd as quick as possible. Andrea's voice is certainly mature and clear, and she is a beautiful young woman but she fails to convey emotion and direction in her songs. With the exception of 'White Horses', she lacks energy - as if she was as bored as I was. I'm afraid Webber may have made a mistake with this one, but I won't write her off completely yet because she is still just a kid. I predict she'll become huge (like Sarah Brightman), but please, no more albums like this one!

Astrud Gilberto made a name for herself when she fortuitously sang on the 1964 US Top 5 smash "The Girl From Ipanema". This association with jazz and bossa nova godfathers brought her a lot of flak from critics quick to dismiss her "artless singing style" and "limited vocal range".
However, to the music listeners who succumbed to her vocal charms - and I sure am one of them - the most important aspect of Astrud Gilberto's singing was her ability to get the most out of everything song she performed. As a bonus, her music greatly benefitted from sumptuous Brazilian cum U. S. orchestrations.
Her honey-voiced delivery is forever able to transport me to warm summer days lazily spent relaxing on the beach of distant and warm faraway oceans, of ... Read More:

Jamie Cullum is an impressive performer, not just live but also on disc. He has a fantastic sense of rhythm and his piano playing is exquisite, making these songs a delight for jazz fans. The tone of his singing is slightly nasal to qualify for one of the all-time great voices but the timing of his delivery is first-class - certainly on a par with the greats.

What is particularly impressive is that most of these songs are either wholly or jointly written by Jamie. There are a handful of standards on the album, which he does with great individuality and panache, but his own songs stand up to this standard very well, making this an excellent album.

Overall, not flawless - it'll be interesting to see how his voice matures with age - but more ... Read More:

I must admit I hadn't heard much Charlie Parker before buying this album as an introduction to bebops founder and one of the world's finest saxophonists to date. After listening to both CD's in this double set right through various times I was addicted and I'm sure I shall buy much more of his work very soon. Many of the bebop enthusiasts I know agreed that the choice of song's on this album were very well selected and clearly outline the saxophonists different stages in his musical career. I recommend this album to diehard bebop fans and everyone else alike either to hear the amazing musicianship, unpressedented composing skills or just to know where every musician in the world hs gained some kind of influence. Pure Genious!!!

A beautiful meeting between 4 great artists. Famously (still) Keith Jarretts last album under anyone elses name. Their styles of expansive but lyrical improving complement perfectly. A real classic in the ECM catalogue - I think the best group record Jarrett ever recorded

Cole Porter (1891-1964) was among the closeted gay artists of his era--and the idea of collecting modern versions of his work for release as an AIDS fundraiser was truly inspired. But the hard truth is that few singers have the vocal skills that a Porter song demands, and the resulting RED HOT + BLUE is an extremely inconsistent mix of the truly sublime and the truly dire.

On the sublime side, the Neville Brothers offer a truly elegant reworking of the seldom performed but incredibly beautiful "In The Still of the Night," infusing the delicate melody with their own unique multicultural sound to tremendous effect. Fine Young Cannibals also do a remarkable version--and one that would have been sure to bring a wicked grin to Porter's face--of the often censored ... Read More:

Lacks the magic of the songs of her earlier CDs but that's probably just my bias. This is not denying her ability as a superb singer and especially of jazz/blue music. Great rendition of 'Blues In The Night' and I liked too her singing of 'I Cried For You'. Regretfully, the selection on this CD does not compare favourably with that of 'Call Of The Search'.

This covers a prolific period - five albums in just over 3 years. It shows the changes in style (from R&B through to "New Wave") and the strength of Graham Parker's songwriting - just listen to the words of You Can't be Too Strong.

At the time many people compared Parker to Elvis Costello, both were equally talented and any Elvis Costello fans would appreciate Parker: some of his earlier R&B is up to Van Morrison standard.

It contains a good selection from the widely acclaimed Squeezing Out Sparks album ( Squeezing Out Sparks). If you were a Parker fan back in the seventies you may go for that first. Why not try this instead, you get the great tracks from SOS plus a whole load of others (at the time of writing at a bargain price).
