Make sure you do some reading up on Eric Dolphy before you buy this. Don't expect to hear anything resembling the winning Blue Note hard bop formula characteristic of the fifities and sixties. As far as Jazz goes this is way ahead of it's time, those who know the contemporary Jazz scene will know that there are plenty of acts out there who try and sound exactly like what you hear on this record.
OK, it's not easy listening. For me Dolphy's compositions are no way near as compelling as some of Ornette Colman's for example. It's quirky, mysterious, it has you scratching your chin trying to figure it all out. "Gazzelloni," starts off as very accessible before disappearing into some great flute loops. Add to that William's nuerotic sounding ... Read More:

So many great songs on one CD. I'm sure everyone must know at least one Louis Prima song (even if they don't know it!) Just A Gigolo, Buona Sera, Jump, Jive, an' Wail, Whistle Stop, The Music Goes Round and Round!! Don't expect to sit down and listen to this one, you can't help but want to dance. Brilliant!

This album is proof that the criticisms of Wayne Shorter being just another Rollins-Coltrane imitator were indeed fatuous. Shorter, who has always incorporated a stronger element of the blues to his playing than Coltrane did in the mid-sixties, mixes this with some masterful composition and improvisation. Couple this with some astounding support from the polyrhythmic Elvin Jones, a (sometimes over) brassy and exuberant Freddie Hubbard, with the mercurial Herbie Hancock and journeyman Ron Carter.

The compositions themselves are wondrous, opening with "Witch Hunt", an interesting piece with a separate intro that moves straight into the main theme. It is a haunting blues with great solos from Shorter and Hubbard, driven along by Jones' ... Read More:

Good listening for all 80's groovers, but anyone hoping to hear some of the little gems that those in the know, cruising the clubs at this time, will remember...well they're not here. Still..good value.

Having grown up with the popular music of the 60s, 70s, 80s etc and loved music from Classical to Heavy Metal but not Jazz. In the past two years I have been introduced to Oscar Peterson and I could almost throw all other genres away after living with this album for the last six months. This is absolute total musical perfection and an awesome early 60s recording.

Looking forward to getting to know other albums.

I was about 15 when I wrote that so apologies are due as I seemed to be lacking in brain cells at that time although I stand by my statement that it's definetely worth dipping into your pockets for, whenever I'm bored of my other cds I put this back in the cd player and become content. The timelessness of most of these classics makes it a joy to listen to among my favourites is nat king coles stardust perfection. I'm also a sucker for joe cockers - bye bye blackbird. 'In the wee small hours of the morning' i do find to be somewhat tiresome and grating at times so possibly skip over that the odd times but other than that it's close to perfection. A fantastic soundtrack to accompany a personal fav film of mine.

Firstly another fantastic collection of tracks by the beautiful norah jones & luckily for me my cd is copy protection free, the ones with protection have a symbol on the back cover,my mum bought a copy of the cd before me & was unaware of the copy protection, the sound quality on hers compared to mine is to put it mildly 'garbage',it's muffled & distorted when played on a normal cd player & just ruins the listen, done her a copy of mine, since she's already paid good money for an inferior cd,i feel it is well within my rights to make a copy! plus the copy of mine is far superior to the distorted copy protection original, think on EMI!

Django Reinhardt is without a doubt the finest Jazz guitarist ever to have lived.

Consequently, the jazz he made in the smokey clubs of 1940's Paris, with his quartet, is amazing. Clarinet, Violin, Drums, and Guitar build fantastic layers and tempos that are unparalleled by any jazz group/artist to attempt it.

Buy any Django Reinhardt CD and love it.

What a fantatic voice and album. Favourite tracks are Smile and What A Wonderful World.

I brought tickets for my Mum and I to go and see him at the Brighton Centre on 21st October just after she was diagnosed with cancer in May and this was one of her aims to get to see him, but sadly she died on the 16th July. I wasn't going to go but did so for Mum and I am so glad I did, he was very funny and talked alot to us all and as well as doing songs from the Ray Quinn album he did a fantastic Elvis Presley medley and what got me is Mum's favourite song is Michael Buble's Home which is going to be Westlife's new single and Ray sang a fantastic version of it. He said it was going to be on his album but was not so hopefully on his next album he will have this version ... Read More:
