Stevie Nicks 3-CD Box Set is a force to be reckoned with. Many will argue that all of the best stuff could have been done on two discs, but that would have eliminated a lot of very interesting compositions out of the light, especially since she alrady had five solo albums. The range of style is vast, from the rocking, "Edge Of Seventeen" to the new piano version of "Rhiannon". Some of the songs here are great collaborations between Nicks and Jeff Lynne/Tom Petty ("Free Fallin"), Kenny Loggins/Melissa Manchester ("Whenever I Call You Friend"), Warren Zevon ("Reconsider Me") and Sheryl Crow ("Somebody Stand By Me").

The other collaborators are an amazingly collection, including, Don Henley (Eagles), Bruce Hornsby (Bruce Hornsby & ... Read More:

All responses to music, recorded or otherwise, are of their nature highly subjective and personal. If you want a Mahler set with emotion overlaid on the music then you should get Bernstein/DGG. This set is in many ways its antithesis.

In a perfect world Symphony 1 would have the short exposition repeat in the first movement. Even without it this performance is one of the most bracing and satisfying that I know.

Symphony 2 is excellent except for the very end of the disc where the engineers limit the volume because of the difficulty of recording this work. Soloists are very fine, however.

Symphony 3 is one of my favourite performances of the work with a bright and clear approach. Movement #1 is particularly noteworthy ... Read More:

This is, indeed, a great performance of the Ring, though to my mind not in the same class as Krauss or Furtwangler. In many ways it would be an ideal entry point for someone looking for a single recording of the cycle, but it is important to note that it is not perfect. Part of the delight of the Solti recording is the magnificent scale of the sound (this is a live recording, albeit from Bayreuth), which will draw new listeners in; more annoyingly this set does not have a libretto, which is crucial for people discovering the Ring. If you are new to the Ring, the Solti set is probably a better bet, or go for the wonderful Barenboim DVDs, where you can follow the action visually, and the text through subtitles.

Not bad at £3.22 per symphony or 83p per movement..

However, I wouldn't rate the recordings as highly as other versions. I would heartily recommend the more recent Gunter Wand / Berlin Phil series (some of which is currently available at bargain "Used and New" prices) for a more polished, warmer, fuller orchestral sound. It's very much a generalisation (and perhaps more a result of the recording than the playing) but there are times when the strings seem thin and the brass slightly overzealous.

Another good source of better quality, low-price Bruckner recordings is Naxos (mainly Georg Tintner and Royal Scottish National Orchestra). The Naxos collection offers a more complete selection, with symphonies '00' and '0' which Bruckner discarded but didn't ... Read More:

I was recommended this set by one of the world's leading authorities on Messiaen whose own recordings are considered (and are) 'benchmark'. That is surely the strongest recommendation! So...

I bought this as a present to myself (and with just reason) as a memory of something extra special. It is truly wonderful to hear all those glorious sounds and colours, the power and glory of this great music in such resplendent sound and recording. However good other recordings may be, this is superlative in all respects.

Composers, organists, Messiaen fans, whoever, just go and treat yourselves!

Having been a fan for about 25 years it was good to be re-introduced to some of Ralph's old classics. His style has varied over the years and when one listens to albums like 'Red Sky' and 'Sand in your Shoes' which contain some political ideas, it is easy to forget about songs like Factory Girl and Michael, yet these were the songs that first introduced me to his music. This colection includes a great selection of songs and would be a good introduction for someone not familiar with Ralph's work as there is a variety of styles. His instrumental work is first class and this set proves he is an extraordinary talent. Anyone who enjoys well written songs not over-performed will love this collection & there's even a few laughs to be had with Kenny the Kangaroo and I Like Rubbish (but not the ... Read More:

Music : Fruit Tree: +DVD
I first heard Nick Drake in 1969 on a friend's portable record player - maybe it was even a Dansette. I Immediately connected - his timbre matched mine, but his guitar was way out there! Maybe the roll-ups helped - but we waited eagerly for his next release -and his next . . . and then? After that, nothing - rien, nada, niente! What a blow! I wept buckets the day Nick died - along with, maybe 200 other fans! At the time of "Bryter Layter" I was working for ZigZag magazine and Connor McKnight, the editor, was transfixed, and wrote maybe what was the first really in-depth article. We tried, in vain, to contact Nick, without success . . . but, hopefully Connor's article helped - maybe Island managed to sell another couple of hundred copies.
Since then, I've bought all the re-issues. This last incarnation ... Read More:

This is an outstanding complete cycle of Beethoven's Piano Concertos. I ordered it after being very disappointed with the Brendel/Rattle set (from which I expected great things being a great admirer of both) and this Uchida/Sanderling set was a revelation. Uchida's more recent recordings of the late Piano Sonatas have proved her to be a very fine interpreter of Beethoven, winning almost universal praise, and this re-issue of her earlier ventures into Beethoven shows that she is very, very good in the concertos as well.

As with her excellent Mozart concertos, one of Uchida's great strengths is her restraint and refusal to resort to the sort of techniques which are intended to draw attention to the brilliance of the soloist and which (in my view, anyway) distract from the brilliance of the music. It ... Read More:
