I only really came to appreciate Sibelius in the last couple of years, travelling through time from Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms; I'm glad to have taken the trouble. Although I find something a little sterile about some aspects of the performances of some parts of this bargain box, I guess that Sir Colin Davis is allowed to relax a little on this umpteenth traversal of Sibelius's orchestral music. The RCA sound quality is just fine and I agree with the other reviewers that this set would make a great choice for Sibelius beginners; it certainly proved to be so for me!

ZTT were one of THE great record labels during my formative years and this beautifully fashioned collection is everything I hoped it would be. Pretty much all of the big hits and Trevor Horn productions are included, alongside a lot of lesser known but often equally interesting tunes by artists like The Frames, Heights of Abraham and Tara, who was Joan Collin's daughter, don't you know. I didn't. Plus you get a DVD disc featuring 18 ZTT videos. I had seen many of the performances in this set recommended separately so to have them all together in one set at such a low price is great. The sound is very good and even if you only like half the music on these CDs, this is still a fantastic bargain.

Look no further than this for an excellent set of Mendelssohn Symphonies and Overtures, superbly recorded and peformed. Always rather underestimated, in my opinion, compared to Beethoven and Schubert. Shame though, that the text for the "Hymn of Praise" (Symphony Nr 2)is not included in the notes..

I have given some time to this box set and found the orchestral playing to be foursquare and the conducting not particularly inspired. How on earth anyone can pretend to compare these to Rattle's wonderful (more expensive) VPO set is beyond me. The sound is pretty good in Liverpool and Manchester studios/concert halls. Like Mackerras' Haydn on Telarc, this does nothing to me, despite its popularity. His Mozart symphonies on Telarc, and Handel etc are wonderful, but this Beethoven is dull and obvious, to my ears. Sorry. This a great collection for a number of reasons; not only does it deliver the standard favourites that you would expect, Stay With Me, Pool Hall Richard etc but it also has "live" & "in session" versions of many songs thrown in, too. There's an interesting live cover of Free's "Stealer" which shows how much respect bands of that time had for each other. It's also great from a study of what music was like in the early 70's & the loose, easy style of the faces often belied the true talent which lay underneath & reminds us of what a great rock singer Rod Stewart is. The fictional detective Paul Temple was created by author Francis Durbridge in the 1930's. Durbridge's style of fiction writing is very much from the Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers sta- ble. Therefore you know exactly what to expect. Well spoken upper class/ upper middle class central characters, intricate plots, red herrings galore and a mounting body count. This box is worth buying for the Barbirolli disks alone (if you don't have them). Then there are the Groves recordings of King Olaf, Caractacus, and minor orchestral works, not to mention Boult's Apostles and Kingdom (never bettered in my view), and many other things. I suppose I am biased. I cut my teeth on many of these recordings, when they were first released on LP. Any disappointments for me? Perhaps. The final disk of Elgar conducting Elgar struck me as a thrown-together assortment of bits and pieces, a missed opportunity, but that's a small quibble given the sheer quality and quantity of fine things in this box.
