If you're looking for a neat synopsis of Paul Weller's work you should definitely check this out. This collection is great to use if you're looking for a particular track or period of his expansive career but working through the tracks is perhaps the best way to see how his work has developed over the decades. His talent, & this collection, go deeper than the hits - if you're not too familiar with his work, this is pretty much essential listening; if you're already a fan, this is a "must have"! Just fantastic.

The first thing to say about this collection is that although some of Dolly's hits are here, a lot of them are missing including Jolene, 9 to 5, Here you come again, Coat of many colors, Two doors down, Joshua, Bargain store, The seeker, Old flames and You're the only one (to name a few). This is not, and was never meant to be, a hits collection. Plenty of those are already available. I'm sure that a lot of fans would have been happy for this collection to completely avoid the obvious classics (I know that I would) but I guess that commercial reality necessitated the inclusion of some of them. This 5 CD collection from EMI Classics was released in 2006 to coincide nicely with the 150th anniversary (in 2007) of Elgar's birth in 1857. Included in the set are all the major orchestral works written by Elgar, recorded on various dates between 1962 and 1966. The performances are notable for both the conductor and artists. There is probably no better or appropriate interpreter of Elgar's work than Sir John Barbirolli, who played for the London Symphony Orchestra for the first performance (in 1919) of the cello concerto under the direction of Elgar himself - later the same year incidently Barbirolli was himself the soloist. This is truly a gem. Three CD's of an outstanding folk/rock legend. The "Best Off" is a single album. With this set you get all the hits and a lot more for only a couple of pounds extra. If there are a few tracks that don't immediately make you sing along, there are many others that do.

I bought this set on the strength of several glowing reviews on Amazon (British and American) and on ClassicsToday, although I already have the complete cycle several times over: by various conductors and orchestras (Haitink, Chailly, Solti, Sieghart, Bernstein, Rattle, Haenchen, Neumann, Inbal etc.) and the box sets by Edo de Waart on RCA/Cobra (good, but now out of print; if it's available it's rediculously over priced), Emil Tabakov on Cappricio (quite good, it's budget price making it a great bargain) and Michael Gielen on Hänssler (outstanding modernist view). I relish this set because of the wonderfully warm sound quality (listen to those very deep basses in the "Alles Vergängliche" chorus at the end of the 8th symphony), the non-prima donna singing of most vocal ...
