I rank Paul Weller at the same level as Lennon/McCartney and David/Bacharach as a composer. This box set captures almost all his work with The Style Council who, along with the Smiths, were the greatest band of the 1980s. However it is not quite complete because it misses some great songs and in particular My Very Good Friend found on "Here's Some That Got Away". That album is a must buy.

The Duke of Plaza-Toro's instruction to the heirs to the throne of Barataria to preserve a demeanor "still sufficiently dignified" answers a criticism levelled at this series of Savoy Operas recorded under the direction of Sir Malcolm Sargent. Lacking dialogue, and using major British singers who never actually performed on stage in Gilbert and Sullivan, the presentation, especially of the first two of the series to appear, was considered too sedate. A great improvement was made when veteran singer George Baker was invited to participate in the remainder of the series. It just seems incredible that Slade have had to wait this long for a Box Set when several lesser bands have had more than they actually deserve. Slade were the undoubted Kings of the 70s Charts, their singles and albums were pretty much unbeatable. I think if you listen to this set you will hear the story of a band that reached an unbelievable commercial high and then for some reason when they were making some of their best records the popularity started to decline. I bought this on the day of release and it sounds absolutely brilliant! The remastered tracks are all stunning and it just shows a band with two of the best songwriters ever to come out of the UK.

I grew up listening to Black Sabbath. During the mid-70s they, along with Rush, established themselves as my favorite band. I've had all the early Ozzy era albums on vinyl, then on CD and now I treated myself to these remasters on the strength of Joe Siegler's review on his excellent Sabbath webpage. I wasn't disappointed. There's a clarity and depth here that isn't present on the other versions I've owned previosuly, so its a delight to listen to these newly polished versions. Bill comes across better than ever, and they haven't mucked up Tony and Geezer's sounds in the process. Although I dearly wanted Tebaldi, Bergonzi & del Monaco in these marvellous operas, I fought shy of buying this set for weeks after reading the previous reviews as I understood that these were all mono recordings although Boheme and Butterfly had been re-recorded in stereo. Eventually I couldn't resist (especially at some of the marketplace prices). I thought I'd start with the earliest recording - Manon Lescaut from 1954. Imagine my sheer unalloyed joy when glorious Decca ffss twin-channel sound poured out of the speakers. I hastily checked the booklet and the box, but no word of what might be stereo or mono - then I looked at all the individual disks. Each one declares itself to be Stereo. Yeehah! Fashions come and go. From the latter years of the 20 Century the attempt to "recover" what Beethoven might have expected to hear through the use of copies of instruments in use at the time of composition and attention to (Czerny's?) metronome markings in the symphonic scores has has given us a current performing tradition of "lean and fast" Beethoven. This tradition is wonderfully well served on Sir Roger Norrington's complete set of the symphonies with the SWD Rundfunksorchest available on Hanssler (NOT the London Classical Players' set so temptingly cheap on Virgin!)and this would be my desert island set (it is easily available from Amazon though costs just over twice as much as the Klemperer discs. However, despite the absense of this handful of songs, this is still a must have compilation. Spanning Van's extensive career, it captures not only the few commercial 'hits' that Van has recorded (such as 'Gloria', 'Brown Eyed Girl' and 'Here Comes The Night'), but extends into his more self-indulgent moments found buried within his many albums as well as including a selection of popular songs featured in movies ('Someone Like You', 'Moondance' and 'Days Like This' are possibly the best ... My brother introduced me to the Flying Pickets years ago, and having found an old cassette, I got on to Amazon to see if a CD was available. The kind of a cappella singing I'm involved with is more likely to be Handel or Poulenc, but the FP's are fantastic. PS : there is a video of them singing "Only You" on the internet - which you can also hear sung by a Spanish choir - I think in Spanish. Unusual.

I know little of the history of the DHM label compared to Harmonia Mundi itself - but regardless this collection is not just terrific value, it is terrific quality. And if you already have the HM 50th anniversary collection, this is a worthy addition. And along with the 200 years of the music of Versailles collection ... all I can say is you'll have a long but worthwhile CD ripping session (to flac!) to make all this music far more easily accessible on PC, streamed to HiFi, or a decent portable flac-capable "MP3" player.
