My experience was the same as that of Robert Livingston -- the wrong disc (a duplicate) in one of the sleeves (and actually the same wrong disc in the same wrong sleeve); and everything he says about the shoddy presentation is true. Any listener will want to correlate the symphonies with what was going on at the time in the Soviet cultural world, for which he needs at the very least the dates of composition: these, however, can be easily found on the internet, as can also informative reviews of previous issues of the individual CDs.
How good are these works? They are never as good as Shostakovich at his best, and never as bad as Shostakovich at his worst. Despite superficial influence from Scriabin and other innovators, we rarely get ... Read More:

We have loved this album for 30 years. We are so pleased it has been released on CD. It was originally part of a very small collection of gramophone records, and is now one of hundreds of CDs, but it is one we keep playing and playing.
The singing is flawless, the songs are wonderful and the arrangements are very clever. What more could you want?

It includes The Kings' Singers theme song, "What Kind of Things (do the Kings' Singers sing?)" which is a humorous description of the variety in their music and in their vocal ranges.

Other highlights are:
Summertime, which is quite close to the original sheet music, carefully arranged for 6 voices.

The folk song Scarborough Fair adheres quite closely to the Simon and ... Read More:

Although I had reservations about buying this (after reading some of the other reviews on this and other sites) I succumbed as usual as I have done for every other box set Sony/Columbia has released.
Like the other boxes in this reissue series, there are many things to enjoy, but also a few "duffers". It's engrossing if you are a fan of Miles, but to be honest, it doesn't shed too much new light on his early `70s work (which is excellent when you listen to those works actually released at the time).
Aside from the "On The Corner" takes, the other highlights are the pieces which feature Pete Cosey and Dave Liebman. Liebman especially shines on the pieces he features on, with some excellent improvisation from him. Miles' improvisations sound a little ... Read More:

I was introduced to the symphonies of Vaughan Williams in my teens through LPs of the complete cycle by Andre Previn and the LSO. These LPs have now been transferred to disc and have been made available again. They remain, after all these years and having listened to a number of other cycles, the best of the bunch, in my humble opinion.

Before moving to London, part of Andre Previn's background was in the theatre. As an American showman, he proved capable - and still is capable - of bringing out the drama inherent in the symphonic form, whilst at the same time producing a deeper understanding of the traits that make up each symphony.

There are two anecdotes I like about Previn's relationship to the music of RVW. I do not know if either is apocryphal. ... Read More:

I was introduced to the glorious voice of Paul Robeson by way of my grandfather's 78s, and he would have wept tears of joy at this superlative presentation from EMI Classics, which I've been playing in concentrated bursts ever since it arrived.

Three versions of "Ol' Man River" are included, the first being the Columbia recording from the Drury Lane production of "Show Boat", which was not released at the time because Robeson was under contract to Victor/HMV. That is the opening track of the first CD, which is fitting, because Robeson's role as Joe launched his career in England. The importance of the song to his career merited some care in its background description. The play had been adapted from Edna Ferber's novel, with Oscar Hammerstein II writing book and lyrics, ... This is real value for money. 71 CDs of music and 1 CD of libretti of all the operas in the set (which can be printed off for convenience). Many of the recordings are oldies but goodies with the likes of Callas, Schwarkopf, Baltsa, Streich, Seefried, Domingo, Vickers, and many many more to delight. Masses by Bach, German Requiem by Brahams and many operas by Puccini, Wagner, Strauss, Humperdink, Offenbach. A must buy for any wishing to start a library of vocal music and for those who already have a library to be augmented. 5 stars for value for money and the recordings which I have heard so far are excellent.

These two discs contain three complete, original recordings by this unique composer, who along with Schifrin changed the sound of film music. His music for many great Sergio Leone westerns announced a new direction for the evolution of the soundtrack, with the sort of creative and often startling use of instrumentation so well exhibited on this collection.

The first cd presents the music from the first two 'Dollars' films. The opening theme, not one of his best-known, builds on guitars and an evocative whistled melody with unsettling vocals and rolling percussion, which carries your imagination over a sunscorched desert plain. Full string sounds layer the music, adding depth and musical texture.
Whilst you notice the most significant themes almost ooze from the score, ... Read More:

Like many Putumayo compilations, the tracks here are a well-chosen collection of top-quality material from local artists. However, with all of Latin America to choose from, the Putumayo people have outdone themselves this time. Every track is a superb piece of atmospheric down-tempo pop with a rich Latin flavour. It's one of the very few albums I can't imagine every getting sick of - perfect as background music and also well worthy of more attentive listening. If you like modern Latin music and only ever buy one Putumayo compilation (and I've bought lots) get this.

This is a moving and wonderful collection of songs, the last work of such a fine talent. I've played this umpteen times and it's worth every penny. Sensational recordings, and if you liked the American sessions with Rick Rubin, you'll love this.

Fantastic. Worth buying just to hear "The L&M Don't Stop Here Anymore."
