This compilation basically showcases SLF singles, although be warned the B sides really are not up to much. Moreover, the production on a lot of the songs on this really sounds dated and some of it is hard to listen to. It must be said that Jake Burns is NOW a great singer but his vocals on SLF's early stuff really aren't up to much, it's just a gravelly shout. Nonetheless, towards the latter stages of this compilation (for example, on tracks such as "listen" or "Bits of Kids") his vocal delivery really picks up, although I would say their live cds are a far better bet to catch the quintessential SLF experience. Alternatively, buy "Get a Life", "Tinderbox", or the best of cd selected by Jake called "song by song" which I personally think is ... Read More:

If like me, you've admired Ozzy's music over the years, but don't have all of the albums, or if you weren't old enough to have appreciated his early classics (especially from the Randy Roads era, which account for the first 9 tracks of this double CD) this is definitely an album you should buy.
There is almost a full spectrum of hard hitting classics like "Bark at the Moon", "Rock 'N' Roll Rebel" and his most memorable slower melodic numbers such as "You're No Different", "So Tired", encompassing Ozzy's career from circa 1980 to 2001.
This only lost one star, for me, due to the exclusion of any material from 1986's "Ultimate Sin" album. For example Ozzy's biggest charting hit "Shot in the Dark." Despite such an omission, this is ... Read More:

Siouxsie & the banshees influenced some of the best music of the last decades. In fact, Trip-hop could have never existed wihout them.
MASSIVE ATTACK recorded a cover of "Metal Poscard"(from "The Scream") in 1997 for "The Jackal" cd. TRICKY sang in 1996 "Tattoo"(from "Downside-Up") on his "Nearly god" album. Other famous singers were also inspired by them : JEFF BUCKLEY covered live "killing Time"(from "Boomerang") which is a Siouxsie / The Creatures composition. MORRISSEY even recorded a single "Interlude" in duet with Siouxsie !!! where as others like Shirley Manson from GARBAGE wrote in 2003 the foreword of "The Siouxsie & The Banshees's Authorized Biography". So, this band can't be ignored in every good collection of albums.

Whilst all the tracks on this are great songs from a great band, the album covers ground already covered by previous cds such as 'Ramones Mania' and more recently and exhaustively covered in the Ramones Anthology.

I have no snobbish antipathy towards mass-market compilations. For someone looking for an introduction to a band they are often useful - indeed my first proper introduction to the Ramones was the above mentioned 'Mania'. There's nothing wrong with this CD but we've already got a slew of compilations of Ramones material available. Don't let the Ramones end up like Roxy Music, David Bowie etc. with a new compilation every five years, with the same tracks in a different order.

If you think the Ramones might be for you ... Read More:

fantastic album but only 4 stars due to a lack of a couple of essential stranglers songs, eg. waltzin black, bear cage and i'd liked to have had a few more songs from their masterpiece, "the raven" included.

still a really cool compilation though from a very underrated piece of british musical history. some of the organ solo's will make your head spin, and i have seen it make people nauseous and lunge for the stereo to turn it off, so beware!

you might want to get "the collection 77-88" instead and give the later stuff a miss. it's just a bit tame compared to the older stuff.

66.The Best of Black Sabbath by: Black Sabbath
January 23, 2006
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : The Best of Black Sabbath
This really is the best of Black Sabbath. If you have not heard of them or are just trying them out because you know they are classed as legends then you cannot go wrong with this compilation.
If you are a Sabbath fan but maybe you have all their recordings on vinyl then go for the box set 1970-1978 instead.
If you are trying out Sabbath because of Ozzy Osbourne and recent found glory then be aware that this material is harding hitting than his solo material, with more guitar rifts and darker lyrics, but it is brilliant.

This covers a prolific period - five albums in just over 3 years. It shows the changes in style (from R&B through to "New Wave") and the strength of Graham Parker's songwriting - just listen to the words of You Can't be Too Strong.

At the time many people compared Parker to Elvis Costello, both were equally talented and any Elvis Costello fans would appreciate Parker: some of his earlier R&B is up to Van Morrison standard.

It contains a good selection from the widely acclaimed Squeezing Out Sparks album ( Squeezing Out Sparks). If you were a Parker fan back in the seventies you may go for that first. Why not try this instead, you get the great tracks from SOS plus a whole load of others (at the time of writing at a bargain price).

link wray paved the way for many a budding hero in the sixties, jimmy page&
pete townshend have admitted they would not have ever picked up a guitar
had it not been for link wray.in the fifties there were no guitar multi-
-effects boxes ,so link drilled holes in his speaker to get extra sounds
like a phaser effect,as the echo boxes were limited he used to stand @ the top of a spiral staircase of a hotel & record classics like"jack the
ripper".he had a style of using a combination of power-chords & twangy riffs.all of the best tracks of his are here,"ace of spades" "rumble"
"the swag" etc.i have an old black & white video of him from the fifties
playing a daneletro "longhorn" guitar thrashing out "rumble" ... Read More:

I bought this album only knowing one song from it (Help Me Thru the Night). I bought it on faith and I have to say I was not disappointed.

Its a wonderful collection of great rock tunes. The only problem is, that once you've listened to it you want to buy more CD's from Joe Walsh!

Tracks which stand out are 'Tend My Garden', 'Mother Says' and 'The Confessor'. However, every track is great.

The best songs on this CD are Jimmy Jimmy, My Perfect Cousin and the superb Teenage Kicks, which as the late John Peel said is probably the best pop song ever written.

The Undertones showed that punk wasn't just about thrashing and spitting - they wrote and played good tunes and knew how long a song should last and how to finish it with a flourish.
