This may not be Clapton's finest hour as a guitar player. But amongst the post 'God' collections of shall we say Laid Back Clapton, this could well be the finest. It is such a pleasure to listen to this album...pretty damn consistent in its quality...and although no guitar heroics here, there are some songs which remain my favourite in his entire back catalogue. He is of course helped by having Bob Dylan contribute two songs here, the sublime opener 'Walk Out In The Rain' and the rocking opener to side 2 (vinyl) 'If I Don't Be There By Morning'. One can imagine Claptons's joy at hearing the demos sent to him by Dylan. And apparently he was offered four songs. What happened to the other two? As far as I know they have never surfaced. ... I love this album. Slip Away and Scattered are two of the best songs Neil Young has ever done. The whole thing is grungy and chugging, but the melodies are still there, underpinning it all. If you like Silver and Gold, it might not be for you, but for anyone who loved Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, this natural successor is for you.

Music : Some Girls
In 1978, in the midst of punk there was the conflicting monster at large as well - King Kong to punk's Godzilla - in disco. Punk was a cult. Disco was massive. Over the next few years, many atists who would previously have eschewed disco as something unmentionable, dabbed in it - power chord rockers Queen with "Another One Bites The Dust" and the "Hot Space Album"; mighty Swedish poppers Abba with "Summer Night City", "Voulez Vous" and "Lay You Love On me"; The Jam with "Precious"; The Clash with "The Magnificent Seven"; why, even Led Zeppelin played around with a bit of cod-reggae/funk on "D'yer Maker". Most of these were pre-dated by some of The Stones' cuts on "Some Girls", notably the seismic "Miss You", with Bill Wyman's rubber-band bass to the ... Read More:

Music : Burnt Weeny Sandwich
This was just about the last of the original MOI albums("Weasels" was released after they and FZ split)and it is my all time favourite album, not just by FZ but by anybody.
Two covers of 1950s doowop(WPLJ and Valarie)are the bread, the sandwich is the remainder, fantastic instrumentals showing both the Mothers in full flight(mostly in the studio, but some bits,ie the guitar solo in "Holiday in Berlin Full Blown",spliced in from live shows),FZ's blossoming as a guitarist, and lastly his abilities as a composer and bandleader.Highlights are hard to pick out as the music is so good, but "Holiday In Berlin Full Blown","Aybe Sea"(a rare example of FZ playing auocustic guitar)and the piano solo followed by the full force of the MOI at the begining of "Little House ... I consider this album very under-rated. If it is atypical of Clapton, then all the better for it. The highlight of the album for me is "sign language", the Dylan collaboration but the laid back "black summer rain" is a superb track, laid back Clapton at his best. "Hello old friend" was a successful single and again, it's a fine track.

Double trouble doesn't really pull it off for me. Some may like it and it's not a bad track, just done better by others.

Carnival is a bit of fun but not a bad track nonetheless. The other tracks are ok and generally the whole album is worth a listen.

It seems that the best tracks on this are the Clapton originals and the Clapton / Dylan collaboration. It's a shame that EC couldn't write some ... Read More:

Well as anybody must know by now, GM loves Greeny, and you can tell from listening to this disc that he has poured his heart and soul into his playing. Fantastic, much better than his heavier metal playing of earlier years. Can't recommend this one enough.

This is 50 % of what makes the film trully fantastic. And if like me you know every reply and every scene (having seen it umpteen times) it's very evocative. I know of only one other film that manages to combine film and music in that way : ascenceur pour l'échafaud. Would have been perfect if they had included the soundtrack from the credits.

Although I've got all these tracks several times over I made a point of buying a copy of this in order to check out the most recent re-masters of the tracks from the first two Cream albums. The reason, as I have explained in several other reviews, is the unsatisfactory stereo engineering or sound-stage of most of those tracks. I have gone into detail of both early albums in the review of 'The Very Best Of Cream', and again gone into detail about 'Disraeli Gears' in reviews of that album and it's Deluxe Edition.
Well what I have to report is that this latest re-mastering of the material from 'Fresh Cream' and 'Disraeli Gears' is very largely the same as it was before and that the sound stage has been left the way it was. The drums, as in all the previous masterings, ... Read More:

This is a superior "best of" album, and you should get it for the bonus Live disc 2, capturing Gary on the Still Got the Blues and After Hours tours in the early 90s.

The live disc features a tremendous performance of Stormy Monday with Albert King, and the performances of Texas Strut, Moving On, Still Got the Blues and Midnight Blues are superior to the original album versions.

Great album

This was Eric's first concert appearance since The Concert for Bangladesh. Organised by Pete Townshend, it got Eric in front of the `Palpitations', which featured a stellar line-up of talent, including Pete, Steve Winwood, Ron Wood, Jim Capaldi and Rick Grech.

The LP and original CD had six tracks, but this edition is both expanded and improved in sound quality, so it's worth buying even if you have the earlier version. In an unusual situation, the `bonus' tracks are generally superior, too. Layla sounds great and the rarely performed Bell Bottom Blues is as good, if not as impassioned, as the version on the Layla album. Key to the Highway has a nice, loose feel and Crossroads is taken slower than the famous Cream version.

The album's a bit sloppy ... Read More:
