SRV and Double Trouble's final recording is a fitting footnote to a career which would end in a tragic helicopter crash the following year. It's ironic; In Step catches Stevie at his most vital; alive and thankful for the chance he'd been given following years of drug and alcohol abuse. The optimistic tone and fiery licks are showcased in tracks such as "Crossfire" and "Tightrope" and Buddy Guy gets a suitable nod with scalding versions of "Let Me Love You Baby" and "Leave My Girl Alone". The standout track on this recording; however is the more contemplative "Riviera Paradise" - a gorgeous meditation with shimmering guitar and marrow-deep soul. If Stevie had died four years earlier, when his addictions threatened to overwhelm him, we would ... Read More:

...but not one of his best (there are so many to choose from). Still, full of Ry Cooder's lovely bluesy vocals and GORGEOUS guitar playing, so all in all, pretty good.

I was never happy with 'Sweet Wine' from the start. When I got the record in 1971 I was disappointed that it didn't have the concentration or contrapuntal tension of 'Spoonful' another improvisation in the long stretched-out mode that only Cream have ever pulled off. I felt the reason it didn't completely work was that in many passages the bass was too dominant so that the balance of tension with the guitar was lost, and subtlety too was lost because of the sound and volume of the bass. The new mix which is included on the 4 disc set 'Those Were The Days' has rectified all this showing that this improvisation was one of their finest. The bass now makes just the right, subtle, sometimes almost subliminal contribution allowing Clapton's very nuanced and flexible ... Read More:

This is a great straight rock album featuring some great musicians including Jim Keltner on drums, Tim Drummond on bass. John Hiatt of "Riding with the King" also contributes.

All numbers are short rocky numbers with catchy tunes. Each track is great.

"Every woman I know, Crazy 'bout an automobile, and here I am standing with nothin' but rubber heels!" stands out.

After listening to "The Girls From Texas" you may take care to get involved with sweet Texan girls. All songs have a humorous side.

Buy, you will not be disappointed.
(Note that this has little to do with Buena Vista Social Club, which is a great album about Cuban music brought about by Ry Cooder)

For some reason this NY album passed my by...but since buying it I don't think it's come out of my CD player.
The album is acoustic, with gentle backing from the usual players.
The songs are simple and concise but also catchy as hell.
This is a classic Neil album, on par with his commercial best.

The US version of The Stones' second album release, this is a barnstorming collection of earthy, gutsy, dirty r'n'b covers, recorded before Mick and Keith (allegedly) had been locked in a room by their manager to write a song and came up with "Satisfaction" (aren't these Stones myths great?). The new remastered edition is an absolute joy, the clarity of sound truly is as close to the original studio sound as we are ever going to get and is an 100% improvement on previous releases. Highlights are Chuch Berry's "Around And Around", "Suzie Q", "It's All Over Now", "If You Need Me", The Drifters' "Under The Baordwalk" and my own personal favourite, the instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue". This album is the early/mid sixties Rolling Stones at their bluesy, rocky best. Before ... Read More:

The definitive Hendirx cd, brilliantly produced it ranges from low beat blues records such as 'voodoo chile' to upbeat rock records in 'crosstown traffic' to great covers in the form of 'all along the watchtower'.
The 'wah-wah' effect on 'voodoo child slight return' is ledgendary and will be remembered until the end of man.
The guitar playing on '1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)' is brilliant and really suits the pysecdelic theme of the song.
