After the muddy murk of "Goats Head Soup" had failed to reproduce the ad hoc glory of "Exile On Main Street", The Stones went ever so slightly leftfield (and I mean only slightly) as they hung out increasingly in New York, surrounded by the embryonic sounds of disco and ghetto funk. Four years prior to their delve into disco with "Some Girls", here we see tiny hints of The Stones' experiment with Blaxploitation-style funk. The "Theme From Shaft" was still hugely popular in credible circles and listen carefully and you can hear that wah-wah guitar on "If You Can't Rock Me". Although much of the album was recorded in Germany, this urban soul/funk feel is completely New York.

Music : A Meeting By the River

Rick Turner, founder of the fable Alembic Guitars Company, is a friend of Ry Cooder. He played him an album recorded by Vishwa Mohan Bhatt for Water Lily Acoustics. Bhatt is an Indian musician who conceived and plays an instrument called the "mohan vina" which, used with a metal slide, strongly recalls a slide guitar.

Cooder, a master of the latter instrument, was so moved by what he heard that he decided to meet Bhatt. Subsequently, both recorded this instrumental gem of an album.

The recording sessions were very loose and the music was entirely improvised.

The interplay between those two master musicians is such that, as the music progresses, Ry's guitar lines start bending their heads toward India while Vishwa's ... Read More:

I have been listening recently to the superb albums of John Cale. This one is my favourite of his albums that I have heard. Alot of people rate Paris 1919 highly, which is an album I love, but this one is the best for me. I have it as part of the Island Years compilation, but have copied the album onto a seperate disc so that I can enjoy this album individually without having to switch to disc 2 halfway through the 'Slow Dazzle' album [ rather irritating!]. Many superb classics are contained here: 'Mr Wilson' a lovely little send up of the Beach Boys harmonies and a great song to boot. 'Taking It All Away', which has a very catchy chorus, 'Dirty Ass Rock n Roll' still a favourite in the set today. My favourite John Cale song of them all 'Guts' with its hilariously ... Read More:

It's amazing to think this is now (at time of writing) 22 years old. Malmsteen had already exploded onto the scene by the time this came out, and was already dividing fans, critics and guitarists alike with his virtuoso playing and songs with operatic vocals. Despite what some reviewers said, (usually jumping on a rather cowardly bandwagon and seemingly without really listening properly), Malmsteen did write good songs; they were just of a different style to classic rock music. In fact, the tracks on this album work well in terms of keeping to a rock format, whilst integrating Yngwie's classical themes, chord progressions, and electrifying use of natural and harmonic minor scales (among others). The first track is a standout, and its solo, whilst not technically anywhere ... Read More:

This is a mixture of music recorded live and(mostly)in the studio in New York in 1967.The MOI are now in their prime, and the range of styles they play is amazing-remember though,as FZ points out,"This is basically an instrumental album".
Highlights?"King Kong"in all it's majesty, the weird, almost chamber music sound of "Dog Breath Variations",the wonderfully silly vocals of "The Air",Suzy Creamcheese pointing out the risks of the rock lifestyle when it comes to groupies-"We had fleas and lots of crabs, and proceeded to give them to everyone in Laurel Canyon"-,FZ playing aoucustic guitar(a rarity indeed)Ian Underwood whipping it out in Copenhagen, there's something for all the family in this album.
However, there's also a second disc which is a soundtrack for the "Uncle Meat"film, which ... Read More:

Songs for Drella is a concept album written and performed by Lou Reed and John Cale in the wake of the death of their early mentor, cult pop-artist Andy Warhol (Drella was a nickname given to Warhol - an amalgam of Dracula and Cinderella; he wasn't fond of it). Warhol had died suddenly from complications following gall bladder surgery in February 1987; it is said that his death caught Reed off guard. In Warhol's posthumously published diaries, the artist describes his hurt at not being invited to Reed's wedding and his gradual estrangement from the Factory scene. Reed, of course, notoriously fired Warhol in 1967 as manager of The Velvet Underground because, apparently, Warhol was not investing enough time and effort into promoting them. It would seem, then, that the two ex-Velvets have created the fifteen ... Read More:

This really is two separate live albums packaged together. Both are excellent in their own right and would represent a great introduction to SRV for people who don't like to start with a "Best of" cd that becomes redundant once you've decided you like them and have bought up all their back catalogue. Anyone want my Led Zep Remasters?

Anyway, it's two separate concerts at Montreux. The first one is strangely greeted with boos from the crowd, who were presumably expecting HearSay some 21 years before they formed. The second is much better received.

In both concerts, SRV's guitar has an Albert King style twang to it, which gets me every time. His fingers seem to move pretty fast too although, unlike Buddy Guy, his brain is always fast enough to keep up with them.

It was perhaps a little early in a band's career for a live album with only the first two studio albums to draw from. Perhaps Schenker and co new this line up wouldn't last. They certainly laid down on vinyl a great legacy that numerous subsequent live efforts can't compare to. Schenker has provided us with so many live albums it's hard to keep count but you'll struggle to find one with guitar playing this good anywhere.
Cry for the Nations et al are terrific because this band were so well rehearsed. Schenker may have had his whacky moments but He was soo such a perfectionist in his early years it's untrue! A fine line between genius and insanity indeed, Schenker is absolutely stunning on guitar. The production and atmosphere are great, listening to Courvoisier Concerto and Lost Horizons eyes closed takes me back ... Read More:

189.Weasels Ripped My Flesh by: Frank, Mothers of Invention
April 01, 2002
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Released after the separation of the Mothers of Invention, Weasels Ripped My Flesh acts as a sort of sequel (or "phase two) of Burnt Weeny Sandwich. And whilst Burnt Weeny Sandwich has more of a rigid, planned feel to its songs, Weasels captures the groups hectic live performances and their avant-garde free-jazz improvisation.

The album starts off with "Didja Get Any Onya?", a live track which, at first, may sound to you like a bunch of aimless, unnecessary instrumental masturbation ("jamming," I believe it's call) until after a few listens you begin to detect the bizarre song structure. "Didja Get Any Onja?" also contains the track "Charles Ives," which I presume begins at the 2 minute mark with the faux-Deutsch vocals, as well as "The Jelly" which begins around 3 minutes 40 second into the track. This song ... Read More:

Music : Out in the Fields: the Very Best of Gary Moore
This is an absolute cracker of a CD and a must for Gary Moore or Thin Lizzy fans. If it were a single CD it would be worth every penny but this double CD is amazing value. Definitely one of my better buys (and I don't get them all right).
