I bought this album when it came out, on vinyl. Neil Young had been only partly known to me - i tended to think "acoustic" and "folky", which were not the kind of words i was into at that age. John Peel said that "nothing before had prepared him for the magnificence of Zuma" or words to that effect. As a keen JP listener and admirer, i thought I'd give it a go. Fabulous! It was as rock-y and discordant in places as you could wish. The guitaring was a revelation. Great songs, love-it-or-hate-it voice/singing - which i did love. The acoustic numbers and gentler tracks were great songs too, and perfect to sing when you were having a drink with your mates. "I've been looking for a lover, but I haven't met her yet - she'll be nothing like i picture ... Read More:

The woman in our local corner shop often has her Rod Stewart T-shirts on.
"Have you got the Jeff Beck albums yet?" I ask.
She smiles benignly as if to say; "Idiot! What would my Roddy be doing on a Jeff Beck album, I do wish he'd stop asking me that!"
Jeff Beck's first album after leaving The Yardbirds, and after enjoying (?) 2 or 3 chart singles on which HE took the lead vocals this album was an absolute blessing to hear; this was what we expected from a band fronted by him! And yes, regardless of my disbelieveing corner shop lady, her Roddy sings on all the original album tracks, and makes an especially fine job on every one of them, and would surprise quite a few of those disbeliever's in the process with 'Ol Man River' for starters. ... 'Rust Never Sleeps' is an intriguing, odd and at times excellent album with songs which must rank among Neil Young's finest. The album was recorded on the road during the 'Comes A Time' 1978 tour and it's a half acoustic, half electric affair. The majority of the tracks were either recorded in one take or live in concert but because the audience is omitted during the mix the album isn't 'live' but yearns to be.You will need to purchase the excellent 'Live Rust' to appreciate the actual tour concerts and includes four of the nine songs here.
'Rust Never Sleeps' however does contain some of Neil Young's strongest compositions. It begins with the acoustic 'My My Hey Hey' which is aimed at the music industry and 'Pocahontas' is one of Young's finest pieces of work, pitiful ... Read More:

I like a variety of music from country through to thrash metal. Enjoy listening to Roy Harper and Bob Dylan so I thought I would give Neil Young a try. Knew nothing about this album before I bought it but the gravely, drawn, folk/rock melodies are simply excellent. I definetly will be purchasing more.

I have been a guitarist for 47 years, I have never understood why Clapton is so highly rated, believe me his limitations are laughable. If you want blue-based Rock n Roll, Ry Cooder produces better albums, at least they have heart and guts.
Clapton unplugged is so lame, and the sidesmen so timid, trying never to show up the boss, the album is rehearsed to death. I remember B.B. King on one of his visits saying he was off to see a real guitarist at Ronnie Scott - Barney Kessel. I think when Joe Public decides that some-one is God that person ends up believing it, and if they harbour any doubt then they can always to resort to drugs and liquor.

A banal, irritating record. The lyrics are full of cliches, and the music is unexceptional. Only "Natural Beauty" rises above the dross.

Born in 1940's Seattle, Jimi Hendrix would go on to be the ultimate guitar Legend in both his native America and more crucially here in the UK. In the mid sixties, Eric Clapton was God having given the blues sound a complete overhaul, however in the late sixties Clapton was revealed to be just a mere prophet for Hendrix had arrived to save us all.

It's well documented that Hendrix had a gift for creating noises from his guitar that only he could create, this much is true, problem is he raised the bar to a level which has not even been sniffed at since the time of his tragic death in 1970, which certainly has left a big hole on mankind's ability to create.

Despite Hendrix's ability and obvious talent, it was only in the last 5 years of his life that he managed to have ... Read More:

from Gimme Shelter to the last track, good stuff. Very difficult to say something that has not been said already, hard to differentiate between the tracks and say this is better than that. Taken overall, none are better than any other, the whole is one perfect album as performed by the Stones, who are one perfect rock band.

If this really were the best of Cream it would consist almost entirely of live tracks whereas in fact there is only one included here, the celebrated 'Crossroads'. In any case 'Wrapping Paper' and 'Anyone For Tennis' obviously have no business being here as 'the best of' but are here simply because they happened to be released as singles, more because of Cream's management than Cream themselves. On the other hand of course this sort of compilation traditionally rounds up things that are not included on the main albums thus insuring sales to completists.
I really wish they had not chosen to take 'I'm So Glad' from 'Fresh Cream' as this does sound very artificial especially when compared with the amazing live version on 'Goodbye Cream'. There are other far more successful tracks from 'Fresh Cream' they could have ... Read More:

The definitive Hendirx cd, brilliantly produced it ranges from low beat blues records such as 'voodoo chile' to upbeat rock records in 'crosstown traffic' to great covers in the form of 'all along the watchtower'.
The 'wah-wah' effect on 'voodoo child slight return' is ledgendary and will be remembered until the end of man.
The guitar playing on '1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)' is brilliant and really suits the pysecdelic theme of the song.
