Let's be plain about this, if you don't know the music of Frank Zappa but are somehow intrigued and want to know more, you should start with 'Apostrophe' or maybe 'Hot Rats'.

If however, you know a little Zappa and want to find out about his roots then here's a good place to start. This album is quite different from all the stuff that came after. The reason for this is that there's some pretty personal stuff on here. On subsequent releases he developed a sort of highly articulate barrier based on a number of techniques. In matters of a personal nature he later directed his attentions to other groups of people and manufactured the kind of 'Frank' he wanted people to see. In short, after this album he was totally in control. He was ... Read More:

During his life,FZ had many sad experiences with orchestras, both in Europe and the US(see "The Real Frank Zappa Book" for the full gory details). So his music was sometimes recorded, but in less than ideal circumstances,at least as far as he was concerned-see "200 Motels" and the LSO albums.
This project came around as a colaboration with the Ensemble Moderne,a small project performing contemporary music. They seem to have been the ideal companions for FZ.On this CD,they do more than justice to pieces from all parts of FZs career-from "Dog Breath" and "Pound for A Brown",right to "G-Spot Tornado",with some new pieces thrown in,even a bizarre semi-improvised piece called "Welcome To The United States".
The last CD released in FZ's lifetime, and ... Read More:

223.It's Only Rock 'n' Roll by: Rolling Stones

Music : It's Only Rock 'n' Roll
After the muddy murk of "Goats Head Soup" had failed to reproduce the ad hoc glory of "Exile On Main Street", The Stones went ever so slightly leftfield (and I mean only slightly) as they hung out increasingly in New York, surrounded by the embryonic sounds of disco and ghetto funk. Four years prior to their delve into disco with "Some Girls", here we see tiny hints of The Stones' experiment with Blaxploitation-style funk. The "Theme From Shaft" was still hugely popular in credible circles and listen carefully and you can hear that wah-wah guitar on "If You Can't Rock Me". Although much of the album was recorded in Germany, this urban soul/funk feel is completely New York.

The presence of Billy Preston on keyboards once more is vital, nowhere ... Read More:

After David Lee Roth left Van Halen in the mid 80's and Sammy Hagar replaced him, the debate continues about who was the best.

Me? - I like them both!

This is the third of four studio albums that Van Halen released, with Sammy Hagar as the bands singer, between 1986 and 1995.

To me it's the weakest of the four records.

Personally, I think that a few of the songs, like "Spanked" and "Man on a Mission" let the album down, and to me it's not a true representation of Van Halen at their best.

F.U.C.K. is still a good record, and worth having, particularly for some of the better moments like "Poundcake", "Judgement Day" and "The Dream is Over", but if you're new to Van Halen, check out one of their other albums (either ... Read More:

225.Ted Nugent: Remastered by: Ted Nugent

Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Ted Nugent: Remastered
As the previuos reviews have said this is a great thumping bumping grinding beast of an album. It introduced Ted to the masses across the globe. Most of the songs on this album became staple songs on the road for well over a decade. "Stranglehold" "Stormtrooper" "Motor City Madhouse" "Snake Skin Cowboy" there all here. A testament to a better time at least musically that is. Teds playing is hotter than hot as he wrings every last note out of his Gibson Firebird. If you have Van Halens 1st album & Montrose`s debut then you`ve gotta get this to make your collection complete ! One of the best debuts of the Hard Rock/Metal music scene. Go Buy !

Having only ever listened to the original album from in the form it first came out in 1976,the 25TH anniversary edition was on first listening disappointing, partially because the added tracks did not come up to scratch with the 14 tracks on the '76' album but also because some of the tracks had been moved around from the original recordings lineup. However suprisingly after dismissing the second disappointment I persevered and it has grown on me to the extent where when I fancy putting on 'Frampton comes alive' I cannot decide which version to play.........it is a brilliant, classic 70s album that I have never tired of.

BALANCE is a record I have a hard time adjusting too. I find that it has some of Van Halen's best material of their career, and it could have been the best Hagar-lead album, even better than 5150. As it is, BALANCE is a record cluttered with songs that should have been left off and completely kill the momentum of the album.

By 1995, grunge had taken over the world. Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder forever changed the rock and roll landscape, and most hair bands simply did not survive. Eddie Van Halen must have known how widely different the music milieu was, and tried adjusting Van Halen's sound to fit more closely in the times. So Van Halen recorded Balance, an oddly uneven record.

In 1991, when Hagar and co. did their last album, the music terrain hadn't changed. FOR ... Read More:

If there is one good thing to be said about CD's, this-John Cale's Island anthology- should be exhibit A. All 3 of his Island albums plus a couple of extra tracks, in glorius sound, in a neat 2 CD package. It is among the most invigorating rock'n roll recorded in the 70's, a decade not exactly short of musical contenders. Cale's music in his Island years, to my ears, outstrips them all- yes, even his old buddy Lou Reed's work. Now this might seen like an outlandish claim, but listen to the music again, with the volume turned up loud. Some Dirty A-- Rock n' Roll !

Judging by the lack of other reviews I'm in a minority in thinking this is one of late period Cale's better efforts. From the stoned humour of Days Go By to the urban paranoia of This Town there's plenty of good music to get excited about. Try Death in the Wilderness for the arrangement and guitar playing for starters or Lowdown for some typical Cale style relaxed shuffle. This is as near as it gets to a Cale solo album. While it won't win many new converts it's a good answer to those who say he's just been repeating himself for the past thirty odd years.
