231.Hittin' the Note by: The Allman Brothers Band
April 21, 2003
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

Music : Hittin' the Note
This album is right up there with the very best of ABB. It might just be the best album they have released. Fantastic blues guitar on melodic songs that brings shiver to your spine on more than one occasion. I agree with the previous reviewer that often people tend to hype bands they like even though the review item is not that great. In this case, it is different. I have given this album to many friends that never had listened to the ABB before and they all love it. All the songs are great and the finale is worth the album in itself. Dereck and Warren both on slide guitars with Gregg's soothing voice on top is nothing less than riveting. I am not going to tell you to blindly "go buy it", but if you want that feeling you can get when ... Read More:

233.Fragments of a Rainy Season by: John Cale

Music : Fragments of a Rainy Season
I saw John Cale on the tour supporting this album back in 1993 having had no experience of his solo work. It was the best concert I have ever been to. Just Cale and a grand piano or acoustic guitar, but the power of his performance left me absolutely stunned. I bought the album the next day and it has remained one of my favourites ever since.

Ther are some songs of true beauty like Paris 1919, Close Watch and Style It Takes , moments of pure ham as Cale concludes Guts and Fear with dischord and screams, and cover versions of Hallelujah and Heartbreak Hotel which Cale simply takes possession of.

Truely great.

234.Roxy and Elsewhere by: Frank Zappa

Music : Roxy and Elsewhere
I hate live albums, they never seem to deliver the goods in terms of studio versions of the content. In this case (along with Live Dead), I shall make an exception. If I had only ten discs from which I could choose to take to a desert island, Roxy would certainly be among them. The musicianship is outstanding, real 'event horizon' stuff. Then you have the humour. Zappa was so exacting that I doubt very much if the content album could have been better recorded in the studio - that's the magic of Zappa and that's the magic of music. Love it to bits!

This is a reasonable collection of some of Peter Frampton's best known
singles and album tracks, but it inevitably gives only very superficial
coverage of his long career. It would be OK for anyone who wants only a few
examples of his work, but for those seeking a more comprehensive
compilation, or indeed just better value, the double CD 'Shine on' is a far
better choice. With a total of 30 tracks, including the full contents of
'Greatest hits', together with detailed notes and some interesting archive
photos, 'Shine on' is the best Frampton collection currently available and
costs only a small amount more than 'Greatest hits'. So do yourself a
favor and buy it now. (Then when you've allowed that to rekindle ... Read More:

If you like Vai and Satch you're going to absolutely cream yourself listening to this live recording. Joe's set is wonderful, and his newer stuff is, in my opinion, recorded better than on the more recent albums; more guitar heavy. His sense of dirty low down blues really comes over here. Vai's set is absolutely awesome. You will not believe the dual guitar playing in Attitude Song. Listen carefully, that's not a guitar effect, that's two guitarists! It is truly amazing. Both Vai and Satch sound like they're playing out of their skins. Very special versions of their tunes here. You won't want to go back to the album versions once you've heard the extra tricks they've thrown in. Sorry Eric Johnson fans, his playing leaves me completely cold. However, the Vai ... Read More:

237.August by: Eric Clapton

Music : August
Clapton maintains a consistency with August. Better than Journeyman..much better when you listen to Behind the Mask and Walk Away. Whilst writing these reviews, I've just realized that I'm lucky to listen to such memorable tunes; the titles of which I cannot think of in other situations. Another song reaches Divine Heights 'Holy Mother'. Never knew Clapton had such a range.
A Gem definitely albeit a bit flawed.

It's an old but cruel adage for a writer that if you've got nothing to say, then don't bother putting it down on paper. Nowadays anybody with a degree and a word processor can string words together really well. But the difference between that and having a story that just has to be told, is huge. The same is now true of Vai and Satriani. Both can play the guitar like wizards, but when was the last time they had anything to say? Being technically brilliant doesn't mean you make good music. You have to have something bursting out of you. Otherwise, it's just technically brilliant, but also instantly disposable and forgettable. Shame! The music ends up like Dire Straits, but from a sharper more experimental angle. If all you want is musicianship, then it's fine. If you're after ... Read More:

We would spend hours in our teens sitting beside the radio with a microphone in front of the speaker, with a reel-to-reel tape recorder trying to get a decent copy of these sessions. And not being close to a radio during the daytime, inevitably, we would miss a session here and there and curse for doing so. Easy now, innit, with IPod and today's technology, but back then it wasn't quite so clever. And now we have (most) of those long-lost tracks here on one CD. Someone must have suceeded with those reel-to-reel tapes though, as these recordings have been on bootleg for years, and now, finally, the BBC have done the right thing and released them. Mono recordings in most if not every case, this does not matter, it gives an indication toward those low-tech days of yore when things ... Read More:

I am 50 next year and have a lifelong love of music of all sorts. I CD collection is between 2 and 3 thousand (I dare not check exactly) but I was a long time Bob Dylan sceptic, only in the last 5 or 6 years did I buy my first of his albums, and Neil Young was the same until this year. I saw him on TV and read about his career and thought I should give in and give him a got and an so glad I did.

There a a load of very positive reviews of this album here but I did read a lot of sniffy reviews of it on its release. The one thing that you can guarantee from this man is that he will do everything wholeheartedly and with utter commitment. He has never gets pushed into what people expect of him or what the A&R men tell him will sell better. There is a wonderful comment in the ... Read More:
