The original recording of Ruben and the Jets is one of the best ever Zappa albums, even though he might not have cared for that judgement, after all, he was trying to take the piss. Nevertheless it is genius. Then he mixed modern bass and efects on it AND COMPLETELY RUINED THE SOUND. What was he thinking? Zappa mixed the BEST SOUNDING albums while others failed miserably, and then he went and did this. Do not buy the re-mixed CD, look for the original. At least listen to the original before deciding to buy this CD.

I always thought it was a shame that "Idlewild South" opens with the unoriginal and repetitive "Revival". That one really doesn't give much of an indication of what's to follow, which is some of the finest 70s blues-rock you'll ever hear. Gregg Allman's "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'" is a perfectly authentic electric blues number, all quivering harmonica fills, howling slide guitars, and some terrific hooks. A concert favorite for close to 40 years, this is one of band's best-ever songs.

But it's far from being the only highlight on an album which also includes the folkish, acoustic "Midnight Rider", the original "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" (a tight seven minutes!), and a great, swaggering "Leave My Blues At Home".

I admit i really like J.J.Cale.I think he stands there as a reference point
to show us all, how good music can be made with a minimum of resourses and a
maximum of talent. He will never sell out,he will never produce a record of
cheap moments. His guitar playing is just a lesson to all guitar players of
how to create the right mood with -just- the right chords. And in this album,
he has given us another masterpiece-easily among his 10 best songs."Tijuana" is a political song and an emotional dynamite.A song that
could be written by Michelle Shocked.Just play it loud and you will know...

The secret to enjoying this album is to skip the first track (UFO...), which is a bit of a turkey, and for which I've deducted a star! The rest of the disc is well up to the expected standard, featuring phenomenal musicianship (Keltner, Hiatt etcetera) and pin-sharp production. From a rootsy take on "Blue Suede Shoes" to the closing track, "That's the Way..." A brilliant album. If you have a soul, buy it!

this Film soundtrack is surely some of the most sublime, brilliant, purely emotional guitar you will ever hear Eric Clapton play. The critics seemed to completely miss this one - it sort of got lost because Unplugged came out at the same time. The final track is a bit commercial (Tears in Heaven) but it got the airplay and caught everyone's ear ... the rest of this album is ESSENTIAL if you like Clapton.

The album opens with The Closer You Are, a doo-wop number where the deep base male vocal contrasts sharply with the female backing. Sharleena has a similar rhythmic and vocal texture with a reggae beat and powerful electric guitar bursts. The rock song In France, a rude and hilarious put-down of Gallic pretensions, is a great favorite of mine. Next comes the majestic tour de force Ya Hozna, an extended driving rock number with weird distorted vocals. The beat is hypnotic whilst the vocal variation lends it an eerie oriental feel.

Zappa's experimental side finds expression in the mostly instrumental Sinister Footwear II, a long track with an intriguing blend of classical and rock textures, and the equally long Truck Driver Divorce with its ... Read More:

What can you say about something that touches you when you listen to it? From the beginning to the end this album reaches the depths of the spirit. The guitar playing is superb, not only technically but also the feel ... why don't they make music this good today?

It's probably difficult for younger readers to realise what a huge star Marc Bolan was in his day. His star burned briefly but very bright, not because there was anything amazing about his simple, catchy rock and roll rhythms and but because there was no-one with Bolan's glam insouciance - to the guys he was the epitome of cool and to the girls he was the sexiest star of his day. The music was distinctive, easy to dance to and had instant hooks. You could argue that by the time of his tragically early death his creativity was on the wane, fuelled by drugs that bloated his lithe figure and no clear musical direction, but while he was hot, he was truly hot. Bolan and T-Rex said everything you needed to know about the early 70s pop scene.

250.Waka/Jawaka by: Frank Zappa

Music : Waka/Jawaka
Having been knocked out by the brilliance of Apostrophe & One Size... when they were first released, as a teenager I then bought this thinking it would be more of the same. It wasnt.

However, the more I played it, the more I liked it & I still enjoy it today. It was the first album that I owned that I recognised as jazz because of the brass section & it took me into new areas of music. Subsequently I realised that Islands by King Crimson & Bundles by Soft Machine which had been favourites of mine whilst at school (mainly because of the guitar playing) were in fact jazz-rock, but Waka Jawaka was the realisation of my interest in the genre.

For more sophisticated tastes.
