I wish I could start by giving this album more stars. As far as a Jimi Hendrix 'best of' goes, you can't do much better than this. One disc of his best known tracks and another of live and rarer music. The two sides to Jimi's music, the polished, yet still powerfully raw studio work and the soaring, imaginative and soul lifting live work. Hendrix was innovative and unique in his time and listening to his music you are struck again and again by the fact that he is still unsurpassed. His sound has been emulated (often poorly) but never bettered. 'All along the watchtower' and 'Voodoo Chile' start with full force and slap you in the face, where tracks like 'Angel' and 'Little Wing' lull you into his psychedelic, magical patchwork. worth owning just for the 2x versions of "hear my train a comin..", let alone "born under a bad sign" or anything else on here.. the man was an alien, either that or the rest of us are such pathetic examples of human beings that no-one has been able to reach his heights since. and to think some people rate Bono. woah.. just buy it.

I like the Stones and I love raw blues and R&B but I somehow missed out on "Exile on Main Street". So, enthused by such great reviews, I was expecting something special... an earthy, pseudo-live album that, despite its origins in drug addled chaos, would grab my attention and be worth the effort of repeat listening while, on the way, delivering up some classic gems. Well I tried, but what I kept getting was a voice saying "look, matey, you could spend hours trying to get into this but the truth is it ain't that good". Maybe, like Neil Young's "Tonight's the Night" - whose origins and chaotic structure are similar but which still grabs valued space in my music collection - you had to buy it at the time and then listen to it for many years ... This is one of the few albums that can be classed as a masterpiece. From the perfectly crafted album opener 'I Looked Away' to the evocative 'Bell Bottom Blues', the powerful blues of 'Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out' to the great riff on 'Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad', the masterly Hendrix cover 'Little Wing' and of course the song that never loses it's power 'Layla', this album has so many gems and brilliant tracks it is hard to know where to begin. 'Layla' sounds so powerful, especially sitting amidst the other tracks on this album, and on reflection it really does adhere to the 'timeless' label heaped on lesser songs. I have been a guitarist for 47 years, I have never understood why Clapton is so highly rated, believe me his limitations are laughable. If you want blue-based Rock n Roll, Ry Cooder produces better albums, at least they have heart and guts. Clapton unplugged is so lame, and the sidesmen so timid, trying never to show up the boss, the album is rehearsed to death. I remember B.B. King on one of his visits saying he was off to see a real guitarist at Ronnie Scott - Barney Kessel. I think when Joe Public decides that some-one is God that person ends up believing it, and if they harbour any doubt then they can always to resort to drugs and liquor.

If this really were the best of Cream it would consist almost entirely of live tracks whereas in fact there is only one included here, the celebrated 'Crossroads'. In any case 'Wrapping Paper' and 'Anyone For Tennis' obviously have no business being here as 'the best of' but are here simply because they happened to be released as singles, more because of Cream's management than Cream themselves. On the other hand of course this sort of compilation traditionally rounds up things that are not included on the main albums thus insuring sales to completists. I really wish they had not chosen to take 'I'm So Glad' from 'Fresh Cream' as this does sound very artificial especially when compared with the amazing live version on 'Goodbye Cream'. This ablum is a work of art, and made me into a fan for life. I never ever get tired of listening to each song. Great guitar from Mark, and his words tell wonderful stories. Well worth putting into your collection.

Possibly the definitive Cale album, though there are other contenders, 'Okie' sees him running through a varied range of approaches without putting a foot wrong. 'Crying' and 'Cajun Moon' are intense and brooding; 'I'll Be There' and 'Everlovin' Woman' are bright and jaunty; 'Anyway The Wind Blows' is earthy, hypnotic; 'Rock And Roll Records' is an outstanding, mid-paced number; 'Precious Memories' is a beer crate singalong country item. 'I Got The Same Old Blues' is the climax that speaks for itself. Like most of Cale's alums, 'Okie' weighs in at a little over half an hour, but its intimacy wastes nothing.

The cover of this album features a golden heart locket which looks like a caramel filled heart from a box of chocolates. It gives off an immediate warm, comforting ambience and that is exactly what you feel when listening to this, Mark Knopfler's first solo album after leaving Dire Straits. Some of the guitar work is also so moving, as you would expect. Taking off where Dire Straits' final album, "On Every Street" finished, this ploughs many of the same furrows - the trademark guitar is still there on several tracks, providing a mournful fade out, so are the huge helpings of Americana. There are a couple of almost folky compositions and a definite country-tinge pervades the whole work. The woman in our local corner shop often has her Rod Stewart T-shirts on. "Have you got the Jeff Beck albums yet?" I ask. She smiles benignly as if to say; "Idiot! What would my Roddy be doing on a Jeff Beck album, I do wish he'd stop asking me that!" Jeff Beck's first album after leaving The Yardbirds, and after enjoying (?) 2 or 3 chart singles on which HE took the lead vocals this album was an absolute blessing to hear; this was what we expected from a band fronted by him! And yes, regardless of my disbelieveing corner shop lady, her Roddy sings on all the original album tracks, and makes an especially fine job on every one of them, and would surprise quite a few of those disbeliever's in the process with 'Ol Man River' for starters.
