Young kicked off his solo career with a very low key affair. The whole pace of the album is dictated to by the opening jaunty instrumental The Emperor of Wyoming which has a definite country feel to it. The key to the success of a first album is a positive answer to the question "will this artist improve?" With Young it was definitely a yes as you could hear the beginnings of the golden career that was to follow.

So this is a decent stab at things, but there was much better to follow. It includes some pseudo classical twiddly bits and, like on so many Young albums, the sum of the whole is slightly fractured, varying from the prettiness of "Here We Are in the Years," which for me is the outstanding track, to the rambling "The Last ... I wish I could start by giving this album more stars. As far as a Jimi Hendrix 'best of' goes, you can't do much better than this. One disc of his best known tracks and another of live and rarer music. The two sides to Jimi's music, the polished, yet still powerfully raw studio work and the soaring, imaginative and soul lifting live work. Hendrix was innovative and unique in his time and listening to his music you are struck again and again by the fact that he is still unsurpassed. His sound has been emulated (often poorly) but never bettered. 'All along the watchtower' and 'Voodoo Chile' start with full force and slap you in the face, where tracks like 'Angel' and 'Little Wing' lull you into his psychedelic, magical patchwork. His guitar sound and wonderful ... Read More:

'Fresh Cream' was Cream's first release, recorded within a few months of them getting together. It was probably one of the first 'progressive blues' records and as such sounded different to anything else around in 1966, apart from perhaps Jimi Hendrix. Looking back now it seems to contain a slightly odd mix of melodic pop - "I Feel Free", "NSU" "Sweet Wine", updated country blues - "Four Until Late", "I'm So Glad" and harder-edged blues workouts - "Spoonful", "Cat's Squirrel" and "Rollin' And Tumblin'". As time went on it was these workouts that would come to dominate their set as extended jams but here they are relatively concise and in my opinion all the better for that.

Although Clapton's guitar is very much to the fore, the exceptional rhythm section ... Read More:

I don't know what kind of drugs Neil was (or wasn't) on during the making of Trans but it certainly makes for an interesting listen.
The majority of this album is odd in that Neil sings through a vocoder, which makes him sound like a robot, and the music is mostly electronic and dark - Kraftwerk style. There are 3 songs where Neils voice is left alone and he uses an acoustic guitar, they seem out of place here which does break the overall mood but they are still good songs. Little Thing Called Love, the only single, is a catchy little opener but not an indication of the dark electro onslaught that follows. Hold On To Your Love is a light breezy tune that gives the album a little break and Like an Inca is a great closer with an irresistable hook. The vocoder tracks? Computer Age, ... Read More:

My wife has long since banned the playing of Neil Young CD's in the car. She complains that he sounds whinney, and it makes her want to get out and walk. My response is that she's the sort of person who would regard a Picasso painting as being 'not very lifelike'. However, upon hearing this particular album, I concede that my argumant may be slightly flawed.

It isn't that the songs are bad, I personally prefer the folkier, more reflective side of Neil Young, and in this regard Prairie Wind contains some of his best stuff for years, but the fact remains that he has written cheques here that his vocal chords cannot honour.

Songs like 'Falling Off The Face Of The Earth' and 'It's A Dream' are beautiful ballards but they get high, higher perhaps than Neil has ... Read More:

'Golden Heart' is one of those albums that is rarely far from my stereo despite having it in my music collection for many years. It blends perfectly Knopflers voice, songwriting abilities and awesome guitar playing into one heavenly package. From the beautiful opener 'Darling Pretty' to 'Golden Heart' via the upbeat and fun 'Cannibals' and taking in the mournful melancholy of 'Rudiger' this album delivers so much emotion on one CD it almost demands repeated listening. The closing solo on 'Are We in Trouble Now' still gives me goosebumps even now and shows just how much power this album has. Knopflers later solo albums were hit and miss, but this one set the standard so high it was always going to be difficult to live up to it and this is the Knopfler album I keep coming back to. With searing ... Read More:

There are so many great tracks on this album that this could easily be a best of! The unplugged format is perfect for Neil Young and really shows his songs off in their best light and his voice goes just perfectly with acoustic guitar. This is where I began my love of Neil Young and I really believe it is a great starting point in his music and style before delving deeper into his other albums. A great album.
