I hadn't listened to anything by old slow hand in years, but I saw this CD going cheap and thought "why not?". All of the tracks on here are as fresh as the day they came out. Wonderful Tonight, Layla etc have all stood the test of time. Now I can't stop listening to it!

A masterpiece as it has the capacity to satisfy many types of listener:

JJ Cale fans will enjoy the breadth of material

Casual fans will enjoy the consistent high quality of music

Newcomers are bound to be swayed by the fact that the music shows the influence or roots of many a popular artist's set - Dire Straits, Steely Dan, Clapton.

What talent!

Neil always had a very inconstant talent, alternating pearls like Zuma or On the Beach (his masterpiece) to average stuff like Long May you Run and Re Ac Tor to ugly recordings like Old Ways or Everybody's Rocking. This represents his return to form after his delirious ventures into electronics, rockabilly and soul music. The record features an anthem like "rocking in the free world", still sung by Pearl Jam and many others, and gems like Eldorado or Crime in the City. Not all the album is so good though, as is typical of Neil, there are some forgettable songs like Too far Gone or The ways of love, but overall it's a good recording and one of his best since the milestones of the seventies. The sound is, in the good songs, very basic, as it's often the case ... Read More:

This CD has recently found its way back into my car & haven't stopped listening to it all week!
I owned it on vinyl for about 10 years before picking up the CD, its been one of my favourite albums for a long long time.
Real hard heavy dirty guitar riffs, Eric Dovers vocals are great (although some of the lyrics aren't the greatest) & Matt Sorum bashing away at the back is fantastic.
This is better than its follow up (Ain't life Grand) which is good, but 5 O'Clock somewhere is a classic album.
Favourite track? all of them lol. But Beggars & hangers on is a classic, written by none other than Duff Mckagan (check out his band Loaded by the way - they rock)
Slash is currently recording his solo album featuring an array of guest ... Read More:

Is this, I wonder, the greatest filmscore ever made? Well, if it isn't, it must come close.

It is impossible to imagine Wim Wenders' film without the sparse, haunting, melancholy wail of Ry Cooder's guitar, the soundtrack being an integral part of the action (if the film can really be considered to have much in the way of action). It is as difficult to imagine "Paris, Texas" without Cooder's music as it is to imagine the shower scene in "Psycho" without Bernard Herrman's staccato strings but, whereas Herrman's score works only with the film, the music on "Paris, Texas" makes for a raw and wonderful listening experience on its own.

Listen to this album with your eyes closed and the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end with the power ... Read More:

66.Jump Back - Best of '71-'93 by: Rolling Stones
November 22, 1993
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Jump Back - Best of '71-'93
This album starts, aptly enough, with 'Start Me Up', the song which the Rolling Stones sold to Microsoft in order to keep Keith Richards in drug money. It is a mediocre slice of radio-friendly rock, and easily one of the most underwhelming songs the Rolling Stones have ever released.

'Brown Sugar' sounds like what it is: a completely unashamed rip-off of Rhythm and Blues which was pioneered and perfected by far superior black musicians, whilst 'Harlem Shuffle', originally recorded by Bob and Earl is a tragic and cruel massacre to rival anything planned by Pol Pot or Saddam Hussein. Please just skip it, and listen to the original instead, for your own sakes.

This theme of pilfering black culture leads us nicely onto 'It Only Rock n' Roll (And it's stolen)', ... Read More:

A beautiful mixture of music from Mali, the most recognisable African music, and the superb guitar of Ry Cooder.
If you only listen to one track try track 5, Amandrai.
Put a do not disturb sign on your door, Turn off the lights, sit back and be smothered in the lovely slow and smooth playing.
Any music lover cannot fail to enjoy it. Also try Niafunke and The River also by Ali Faka Toure

Possibly the definitive Cale album, though there are other contenders, 'Okie' sees him running through a varied range of approaches without putting a foot wrong. 'Crying' and 'Cajun Moon' are intense and brooding; 'I'll Be There' and 'Everlovin' Woman' are bright and jaunty; 'Anyway The Wind Blows' is earthy, hypnotic; 'Rock And Roll Records' is an outstanding, mid-paced number; 'Precious Memories' is a beer crate singalong country item. 'I Got The Same Old Blues' is the climax that speaks for itself. Like most of Cale's alums, 'Okie' weighs in at a little over half an hour, but its intimacy wastes nothing.

Thankfully the 80s hair metal duel is excluded from this album. Cooder's slide at the beginning of the duel is great, but the song then descends into something more suited to 'This is Spinal Tap'.

The soundtrack contains an interesting take on Robert Johnson's 'Crossroads', a haunting version of Lenoir's 'Down in Mississippi', the awesome 'Nitty Gritty Mississippi', great slide on 'Feeling Bad Blues' and 'Walking Away Blues', and wonderful gospel vocals on 'Somebody's Callin' My Name'.
