91.Kind of Blue by: Miles Davis
March 25, 1997
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Kind of Blue
I can understand why fans of Davis' jazz fusion, jazz rock and electric stuff may find this bland since it was recorded before he decided to explore that newer territory (which I find weird and disappointing). It represents just one part of his journey from the Rhumboogie Orchestra in 1944, via bop and Gill Evans, to the synthesizer-enhanced(?) din he was making towards the end of his career. Only a few days after this session was recorded Coltrane cut "Giant Steps", which is a fair indication of the direction he was a taking.

However, for me and thousands of others this is a beautiful record, with all the musicians performing at their (then) peak. Even Coltrane makes a beautiful sound and they all swing mightily when that is ... Read More:

This is one of those hynotic early sixties Blue Note sessions that must surely go down as one of Jazz's masterpieces. This was recorded as a dedication to Silver's Japanese fans and the reception his band received whilst on tour there.
We start with the kicking,"Too much Sake." It's Silver's agility and sense of tempo, omnipresent on all his recordings that mark his music out. This track is another classic example.
Then we come to, "Sayonara Blues," for me one of the greatest pieces of music in Jazz. Witness the way Silver builds the tempo from a single starting note, his relentless control of the tempo through two admirable solos from Mitchell and Cook and then his own beautiful arching solo that breaks through the rhythm of ... A stunning showcase of Hubbard's talents. For someone so young this serves as an excellent taste of what he was to become. His ranging, harmonic and sometimes downright belligerant style has always entranced me. For me this is his greatest record as a leader, the younster setting out to show eveyone what he has to offer. This record is littered with those characteristic barnstorming solos and his ability of more subtle playing on,"But Beautiful." There's a bit of everything on this from the skipping, jumpy, Horace Silveresque,"Gypsy Blue," to the classy sophisticated,"One mint Julep." Tina Brook's title track really swings. Brook's career disappeared into nothing beacause of his heroin addiction, this record shows what a wasted talent he was ... Read More:

95.World Tour by: Joe Zawinul
May 18, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : World Tour
Having found all of Zawinul's post-Weather Report albums a bit lukewarm & sterile I was overjoyed when I heard "World Tour". This is exactly how the Zawinul Syndicate is supposed to sound: pieces like "Slivovitz Trail" and "Bimoya" were made for this kind of groove-driven funkin' performance.
Just take "Bimoya" and the fabulous "N'Awlins" from disc one and you'll have a set of songs that won't be surpassed by any jazz-funk you'll ever hear. Add "Patriots", "Indiscretions", "Slivovitz Trail" and "Two Lines" and you'll have a ready-made best-of-jazz-funk album. (To be honest, "Two Lines" is the only track on this album that sounded better in the studio version, but the live version here is still good enough to deserve its place.) In fact, there's ... It took a long time before jazz snobbery began to disappear and it took the Beatles to do it.The Beatles were not lovers of jazz themselves and only really rated Humphrey Lyttleton's Bad Penny Blues -which later influenced Lady Madonna.Lennon once said he hated jazz and I wonder whether THAT remark influenced an 80s band to name themselves
JOHNNY HATES JAZZ but whatever.
The Beatles got rid of the musics snob attachments more by accident than design when so many jazzmen began to record versions of their songs-some doing entire albums like Count Basie.
In 1963 American singer Trini Lopez-after a string of failures on King Records- appeared with the Beatles in Paris shortly after he'd come uup with the concept of recording folk songs with live club ... Read More:

At some point in 1956 Sonny Rollins developed from being a promising new voice on the tenor saxophone to one of the great jazz improvisers. From then until his temporary withdrawal from the jazz scene at the end of the decade he produced a series of fine recorded sessions, including a classic album aptly titled ‘Saxophone Colossus’. Whether or not this Village Vanguard recording is one of the best of these, it is valuable for capturing Rollins in good form in a live setting accompanied only by bass and drums. Of additional interest is that the drummer was another jazz colossus treading his own path to greatness: Elvin Jones.

As these were live sessions, it’s not surprising if some of Sonny’s playing is more diffuse than in the more tightly ... Read More:

Taylor Swift is having huge sucess in country right now with this debut no.1 album which has gone x3 Platinum-and it's easy to see why. She's a very talented girl, having co-wrote all the songs and she plays acoustic guitar.

The quality of the songs and the talent of the contributors gave me high hopes for this CD. In most cases though they struggle to top the originals. That said, Aaron Neville's bonkers but brilliant gospel version of the Mickey Mouse March makes the entire purchase worthwhile.

As a drummer I have to hold this in high regard, there are a lot of drummers that love this recording, Tony Williams is still untouchable and with this recording in my car, house and my work van I know that I'm gonna be happy all week every week, it's beautiful and haunting and yet when the action hits it's exactly what I want from jazz. If your not into jazz but want to try it, put this on repeat and let it convert you as it did me.....The other reviewers already say enough I just want to say...Listen to Tony Williams!
