Heard Blue Juice on the Jazz station on DAB and purchased a copy of this CD on the strength of that track. Not so keen on the earlier tracks but from Track 7 onwards this is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Well worth a purchase if like me the jazz hammond is one of your things!

When I was at college my father took me to see Buddy Rich and his Big Band in South London (and they really were the bees knees). Consequently, when I learned about this album from reading Neil Peart's books and being a fan of both Buddy Rich and Neil Peart, I'd thought I'd check it out. What a fabulous album! All the drummers play brilliantly, and more importantly, FOR THE SONG and the Big Band themselves are excellent and very tight. Highly recommended.

This is the RVG remaster of Herbies debut album as bandleader - at the age of 22 !!

The album opens with arguably the most famous of the great mans recordings and there is also an alternate take for real afficiandos !

By any standards this is a classic album with Freddie Hubbard on sparkling form, Dexter Gordon on tenor sax, a great rhythm section and brilliant arrangements.

The remarkable thing about this debut recording is the story behind it - Hancock grew up in Chicago where his extraordinary talent was recognised with a performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the age of 11 - his first paid gig was with Coleman Hawkins in Chicago and his second was with Donald Byrd in New York and at the ... The trouble with Herbie Hancock is that he's so good at what he does that he ends up being judged by his own standards, rather than his music on its own. If we compare this album to Earth Wind and Fire or Quincy Jones then it's right up there with the best disco-funk of the 70s.

Slick 70s production (Rubinson), with a tight but relaxed and happy feel, this album manages to mix danceable froth with serious jazz musicianship in the first three tracks.

The best track though is the fourth - No Means Yes - on which the Headhunters line-up (minus Maupin) do their thing - Harvey Mason and Bill Summers are in a class of their own, Mason with his typical delay on the beat and Summers's polyrhythms whirring around like noisy ... Read More:

I'm not going to write a big review. If you love Jazz, Jazzanova, funky and mellow tunes with not one "ouch" track do buy. This is one album you will not be disappointed with.

(Formerly known as The Jazz Crusaders) THE CRUSADERS are:
JOE SAMPLE - Keyboards
WILTON FELDER - Tenor Saxophone
WAYNE HENDERSON - Trombone
NESBERT "STIX" HOOPER - Drums & Percussion

They've used many session men throughout the years, but two stick out as practically the fifth and sixth member of the band - they are LARRY CARLTON on Guitar with ROBERT "POPS" POPWELL on Bass. It should also be noted that both ARTHUR ADAMS and DEAN PARKS have contributed superb guitar work too - they're featured a lot in the highly creative late 70's period.

There's no info on the back sleeve for prospective buyers, so here's the breakdown:

Murray dug out his vinyl copy of this a few years ago, with 'My Favourite Album Ever' written on the cover in biro. He used to sit in his deckchair in his front room listening to it. I had never heard it. From the first notes, I was entranced. This is a magnificently subtle, understated blend of the two Americas. Cannonball's sax is the lead player, but never overblown. Floating, winding, ebbing & flowing, passionately controlled, he dances with the Bossa Rio Sextet in the sunshine of their sublime, joyfully disciplined rhythms. This is an unselfconscious love affair. Buy yourself a deckchair, allow these craftsmen to play and relax - everything, but everything is taken care of.

This album captures Tubby Hayes at his very best and in indusputably his finest studio recording. Recorded with his new quartet in 1967, it mixes jazz fashions of the day - from avant garde freedoms to modal waltzes, Getz-like balladry and scorching hard bop pyrotechnics - with winning effect.

Hayes plays with towering authority throughout, his tone both full and robust yet pliable and supple. His seven compositions are another reminder of his all-encompassing musical brilliance, and one ("Off The Wagon") has deservedly become his best known theme.

Tubby's youthful sidemen, Mike Pyne, Ron Mathewson and Tony Levin also excel: Pyne echoing Miles Smiles-era Hancock, Levin creating an undulating and chattering drum commentary ... Read More:

I really enjoyed Cantaloupe Island. I am 14 and wasa interested in jazz because of my music teacher. So i asked for pointers where to start. I went and bought cantaloupe island and Kind of Blue.

I was instantly enthraulled by the passion and imaginitive playing that went in to the album. I felt this albumn as a kind of introduction to jazz because i hadnt heard any before and it sounded great. Watermelon Man and Cantaloupe Island are my favorite tracks and i know lots of kids who dont listen to jazz but like this album.

So if you just getting into jazz or you already have a collection then this is a must for anyone who likes music.
