Freddie Hubbbard is in some respects an unsung hero of jazz. He made key contributions to a remarkable number of classic jazz recordings in the early/mid 60s, including several albums with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, Ornette Coleman's 'Free Jazz', Eric Dolphy's 'Out To Lunch,' Wayne Shorter's 'Speak No Evil,' and, for me, containing his best work of all, Herbie Hancock's 'Takin Off,' 'Empyrean Isles,' and 'Maiden Voyage.'
This, however is one of several albums he recorded as leader, on Blue Note, and is widely regarded as his best.
The album begins with a typical Hubbard performance on 'You're My Everything;' his sound is bright with a lovely warm tone and he plays lyrical phrases and fast flowing runs with equal skill. The title ... Read More:

This deserves a review. Not as highly rated it seems as Soul Station but to me his best work. Why?
- Lee Morgan (top trumpet player on hot form)
- Compositions - brilliant, shared by Mobley / Morgan
- themes - memorable
- solos - consistently on the money
- Hill AND Hancock on keys - nice contrast
- Philly on sticks
- Great funky be-bop and gorgeous Carolyn ballad
- CD clocks in at over 50 minutes (including 2 obligatory alternative tracks)
- unbelievably cheap (at present moment)
Oh, and almost forgot, leader Hank's fantastic tone and groove on tenor. The players all sound like they're enjoying these sessions and the ideas being swapped are truly inspiring. One of my top ten Blue Notes. ... Read More:

this is my favourite of all Clifford Brown's albums - as always his sound has soul, style, grace, and depth, and so do the compositions

love every track on here... great way to spend a morning with a coffee this and some of mother nature's finest

Dianne Reeves interpretes every song with a passion that is not common. Her rendering of 'In a sentimental mood' is worth the whole album, which goes on with more surprises at any track.

1956 was a good year for Miles Davis. In two days in the studio he fulfilled the requirements of his contract with Prestige, and produced four brilliant albums to boot. The band - the first "great quintet" of Davis, Coltrane, Garland, Jones and Chambers - was playing supremely well, and the material was an exciting mix of perfectly-delivered standards and newer jazz compositions.

It would be wrong to argue that any one of the four albums recorded in 1956 (the others are Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin' all "with the Miles Davis Quintet") is better than the others, as each demonstrates moments of inspired genius in different ways, but this is for me one to which I turn more frequently than the others. There is one obvious reason for this, ... Read More:
