Despite reports to the contrary, this new collection of Miles Davis' work amounts to an interesting compilation of Davis' career. In particular his work with jazz saxophonist John Coltrane surfaces quite nicely, especially with the opening track 'So What', originally featured on the album 'Kind of Blue'. Davis' playing range is amply demonstrated on numerous tracks, in particular 'E.S.P', 'Milestones' and the beautifully crafted simplicity of 'Generique'. His talent as a jazz great is also demonstrated as he performs 'standards' such as 'Bye Bye Blackbird' and 'Summertime'. We also hear a range of Davis' trumpet playing styles, both 'open' and muted. The latter method of playing almost becoming Davis' trademark. Towards the end of the collection, ... Read More:

I loved "Spain", but had thought that the jazz-flamenco fusion in "Spain again" would only repeat the first. However, this is a new genre with huge potential for change and innovation, as "Spain again" shows. This time Tomatito and Camilo (joined Juan Luis Guerra) have taken Argentinean Tango, plus jazz and flamenco standards, and given them the fusion treatment. The result is an exhilarating, yet sensitive flamenco jazz. It leaves me crying out for more.

Horace Silver produced so much great music that it is understandable that some bits will pass almost unnoticed - until of course they are re-released as part of the magnificent RVG series.

With Art Farmer on top form alongside Clifford Jordan making his only documented collaboration with Silver and a series of fascinating tracks which while lacking the commercial success of previous releases are no less enjoyable this is a shining example of the talents of Silver as composer, bandleader and pianist.

169.Central Park North by: Thad Jones & Mel Lewis
April 19, 2004
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Central Park North
This is great Big Band music, made so by Thad Jones' arrangements, which rather than smoothing the edges as in the band's Consummation CD, allow the musicians in the band to play. As such Richard Davis and Roland Hanna stand out, in particular the former. His electric bass work on the opening track is wonderful. Most importantly, however, the horns sound great throughout, so that you're not just listening to Messrs Hanna and Davis.

In all it's the best Thad Jones/Mel Lewis CD available at the moment, but look out for The Orchestra, if it's ever re-released.

The eponymous track is an amazing "blue" and soothing piece.

This record is very good on the whole.

Not much more to say.

A Miles Davis classic if not a Jazz Classic.
