With apologies to Archie Shepp, I always thought New Thing At Newport looked like a ragtag cobbled together as a token gesture, so I always resisted buying it - there's plenty of other Coltrane music around after all, so I could wait. Now Impulse have done the right thing and released the Coltrane sets from '63 and '65 apparently in their entirety, and the result is a worthwhile addition to an already large Coltrane collection.

The first thing I noticed was the clarity of the sound as the CD opens with I Want To Talk About You, so that every note and clatter, and every whistle from the audience, is clearly audible.

But it's the music, naturally, that is the real treat here, and the second thing that stands out is McCoy ... Read More:

Brilliant album, although by some opinions not essential in the magnificent Thelonious Monk's opus, contains strong trio and quartet performances by the group that includes the great Charlie Rouse, another voice of the leader's musical mind, and equally impressive and coherent bass and drums players...

For the reasons of variety and additional spice, Jon Hendricks' vocal on In Walked Bud (a true jazz-standard) is well executed and very wellcome, although it doesn't elevate the band's performance as I have hoped. However, not much elevation is needed here.

This album is a pure joy and as for the cover... Well, see for your self. Where can I buy a poster of this picture?

p.s. if you buy the edition with bonus ... Read More:

This is unquestionably a classic. From the very first bars filled with the sounds of a Boeing 707 on take off to the effortless cool of the ending, DB has created a masterpiece. Often cited as a pivotal work in the funk jazz explosion of the early 70s, this is an album that no serious music fan should be without.

If there were ever a straw poll of "Jazz Records Which Appeal To People Who Don't Think They Like Jazz" this album would be sure to figure among the top ten.

Recorded during 1961 and 1962, immediately after Coltrane's daring sessions at The Village Vanguard, which included the scorching sustained intensity of "Chasin' The Trane", "Ballads" was a product of two motives. For one, Impulse Records wanted to show Coltrane's varied gifts, in this instance his mastery of ballad playing, something which had figured heavily in his "blow-and-go" sessions for Prestige in the late 1950s but which neither they nor Trane's previous label Atlantic had done much to expose. At the time of recording "Ballads" Coltrane was being slapped with "anti-jazz" ... Read More:

This recording is an essential addition to any serious Jazz collection, capturing as it does five Jazz giants recorded together for the one and only time.

Charlie Parker is on Alto Sax, Dizzy Gillespie Trumpet, Bud Powell Piano, Charles Mingus bass and Max Roach on drums. From the first number "Perdido" you know this something special. A medium tempo version which never stops swinging. Gillespie in particular is in fiery form on this number. On "Salt Peanuts" Bud Powell plays a memorable solo, which precedes a thunderous drum solo from Max Roach.

The atmosphere is fantastic with the crowd applauding the musicians solos, and sometimes you can hear the musicians cajoaling each other to better performances.
