This was the first album that I had heard from Avishai Cohen, having bought it at the concert that I attended. I disliked most jazz, and only attended this concert by some kind of instinctive thought that I would enjoy it. I was wrong. The concert blew my mind! Usually in this situation, buying the album will only disappoint you... The album had a different, more laid back atmosphere to it, but still caught my imagination and introduced me into the world of jazz!

Avishai Cohen, being one of the most versatile and soulful bass players I have known, barely leaves any emotion to the imagination. Some of the music is just unimaginable, yet so likeable and very skilfully executed. Even the recording is very good, which I have found is ... Read More:

The picture of this set shows what looks like the "long box" format. This set was originally sold in a transparent plastic cube. A rather ridiculous format, in my opinion, as the discs are not held that securely in place. However, it's okay, so long as you don't start throwing the thing around.

This box-set covers Herbie Hancock's solo career on CBS. There are two discs of a more sober and reflective nature, and two discs of the jazz-fusion period. I'm not as keen on the former, but there is a lot of very worthwhile material in there. The latter, however, are pretty much uniformly excellent. Half of "Headhunters" is included, including the full-length "Chameleon". Material also comes from the creditable "Sextant", "Manchild" and "Secrets" ... Read More:

John Coltrane's composition `Alabama' Studio Recorded November 18, 1963 - dedicated to the massacre of 4 child innocents and the injured - is elegy, prayer, appeal to sanity. Alabama's passivity weaves naked and anguished throughout a seared, dumb landscape toward the close until appeal seems finally answered by strident assertion. Elegy as catharsis with anger on hand sounds (to me) loaded in Coltrane's final four note stabbing cadence; even Jesus (reportedly) had a grain to cross...

Through dedication John Coltrane possessed the professional felicity to express his heart and feelings through his horn. That's why we love him.

OK, it's 1964, and Bebop has come a long way. We are six years after Coltrane recorded Kind of Blue with Miles, and it would be another five years before Miles records the next milestone: In A Silent Way. Tunes seem to be getting longer and longer...and with A Love Supreme John Coltrane finally produces a recording that gives himself free rein to really explore the furthest recesses from seed ideas, and just go with them. This is a very spiritual album, there seem to be no constraints.
Most of the four tunes begin with a basic theme, which is quickly jettisoned as Coltrane's creative juices start to flow.
There are some astounding sections on this CD, the musicians almost seem to be jostling for position at the mic, and yet they meld organically together. ... Read More:

I agree with the other reviewer here - Young was pretty unique in that his approach to the electric organ came from a purer jazz camp, as opposed to the earthier r'n b roots of someone like Jimmy McGriff. I'd recommend this album both to those who, like myself are coming backwards to him after years of listening to him on the Tony Williams Lifetime albums and to headnodders who dig their early to mid '60's jazz and like it tight but cool. There's a fabulous warmth to Young's organ sound on this album, and that integrates perfectly with the ensemble playing throughout. Nicely remastered, nicely priced - check it out !

You know what influence brought the reggae into the whole music an' you also know who was kinda the first real reggae star inna whole world. Ofcoz Mr.-Jah Blessed-Marley. And ol' jazzin' monster Monty Alexander 4 sure knows it 2. Between his bubblin' and improvised skankin' inna jazz-oriented projects he also played, playes an' will play one drop music enjoyin' all reggae torchin' dreadlocks & baldheads worldwide. When I&I saw the lines sayin' "Monty plays Marley" me just jumped out of my pants an' rushed 2 order this cool CD. Seems 4 Marley himself (if he only could share wid us his point on such versions) it'd be very unexpectable, but it's so true & really from the heart! Amounts of jamaican 2&4/4, gorgeous Sly Dunbar in last track "Could U B Loved" ... Read More:
