"The Sidewinder," is probably Jazz's,"Smells like Teen Spirit." It's undeniably brilliant but it's been so over-exposed, covered and plagiarised down the years that it's genius is no longer instantly apparent. The extended blues track became something of an anchorism for Blue Note, it's a shame because there is some truly wonderful playing on this track, Morgans's ranging trumpet and another set defining performance by Joe Henderson on sax. I prefer to analyse the title track in conjunction with the other brilliant peices of music on this record. You have the hypnotic "Totem Pole," and it's alternate version which somehow manages to be even better. It merges beautifully into the funky,"Gary's Notebook." Higgin's drumwork constantly helps ... Of the 27 tracks on offer here a minimum of 11 are covers and some of the originals are from way back ie Grover Washington and Earl Klugh before the term Smooth Jazz had been dreamt up.

Dont get me wrong you get great musicians here and side one showcases some of the very best including Boney James, Rick Braun, Pieces of a Dream, Fourplay and the Rippingtons, where the CD falls down is side two where 10 0f the 13 tracks are from 1980 and before and would have probably fallen into the Jazz Funk category.

If you are looking to try a smooth jazz album I would recommend hunting down old Jazz FM compliations which are going very cheap on this site eg 101 Eastbound a penny, a bargain with more upto date artists.

Words cannot really do justice to this album. If it catches you just right it is all about the experience and not some intellectual definition. It's a classic for a reason and a great introduction to Miles Davis and jazz in general. Lower the lights, open a bottle of red wine and put this on, it's what jazz is all about!

Apparantly this concert had sound difficulties for the players and it was very hot. In true professional manner they pulled off an amazing concert.
We have come to expect a very very high standard from this trio. Encapsulated in here is a mini history of jazz piano with nods at Fats Waller, Thelonius Monk and Bill Evans, maybe even Bud Powell and Art tatum. The few standards that have been done before on other trio albums are given different treatments here so don't bring any pre conceptions here, they work well in these newer workings. The stride like piano pieces alla fats waller are fun and show these guys can do it straight too and still make their own inimitable mark on the music. I found the drumming of Dejohnette wholly appropriate ... Read More:

Im amazed at how cheap these albums are as the musicianship and technical skill are so impressive. Grant Green's guitar with the vibraphone works beautifully tonally and melodically. An album for a jazz fan.

This is a rarity - a Mingus album with no duff tracks at all - everything is spot-on.The eclecticism of the music and its execution are breathtaking - if you need music to wake you up, try Boogie Stop Shuffle (so that's where they got the Mission Impossible theme from!).The gentler side of Mingus emerges beautifully on the slower tracks such as Pork Pie Hat.As for the recording - how did they manage such stunning sound? OK,it's remastered, but compare it to Monk CDs from the same time and it leaves them behind - vibrant, balanced, clear and dynamic - a must-buy!

Cole Porter (1891-1964) was among the closeted gay artists of his era--and the idea of collecting modern versions of his work for release as an AIDS fundraiser was truly inspired. But the hard truth is that few singers have the vocal skills that a Porter song demands, and the resulting RED HOT + BLUE is an extremely inconsistent mix of the truly sublime and the truly dire.

On the sublime side, the Neville Brothers offer a truly elegant reworking of the seldom performed but incredibly beautiful "In The Still of the Night," infusing the delicate melody with their own unique multicultural sound to tremendous effect. Fine Young Cannibals also do a remarkable version--and one that would have been sure to bring a wicked grin to Porter's face--of the often censored ... Read More:

This was the first Coltrane record I bought after seeing it offer. Well being called 'The Very Best of' I was expecting too much, but this isn't just hyperbole. A great selection of tracks and really stand out performances too (best version of 'My Favorite Things' I've heard).

Certainly a great introduction to the trane, highly accessible. I wouldn't consider myself a connoisseur of the genre, by any stretch, but I imagine this would be a worth while purchase to the more seasoned listeners too.
