Musically, this is one of my favourite John Coltrane albums. McCoy Tyner's piano style is transposed to the big band arrangements, making it sound simultaneously familiar and different to all of Coltrane's work up to that point, and I'm always a fan of the music Coltrane made when he teamed up with Eric Dolphy. My five stars go to the music itself, as released at the time.

However, this is one of those annoying reissues that doesn't actually have the original album as people knew and loved at the time. The tracks are spread across two discs, interspersed with alternative takes and bonus tracks which, while interesting to Coltrane fans, aren't the main attraction. If the alternative takes were isolated to the second disc, keeping ... Read More:

It's the simpleness of his warm, infectious grooves that makes Horace Silver's music so enduring. The Bossa Nova infused title track is a typical example of his ability to pen catchy rhythms, "Song for my father," is notable for Joe Henderson's blazing solo and it remains one of those Blue Note signature tunes. Each track starts with a bass note and a single piano chord before gently building into a tumultuous ebb and flow. "Calcutta Cutie," has a slighly eerie, claustrophobic feel to it and it combines well with the snaking,"Que Pasa." The liner notes on this re-issued version give an interesting insight into the rag bag of musicians that Silver used in laying down the tracks. The rather lengthy recording time and the two quintets involved can ... Read More:

I bought this album on the strength of the many reviews describing it as a work of genius or a religious experience. Well maybe I have missed the point, but to me this is one of the tedious and frustrating albums I have ever heard. The piece simply repeats the same themes over and over again, with somewhat derivative improvisation. Well played but not well constructed.

This is an album that I came to fairly late (in relative terms), having heard DJ Jazzy Jeff use elements of 'Change (Makes You Want To Hustle)' and 'Places And Spaces' in the track 'A Touch Of Jazz'. Having liked the short pieces Jeff used it was relatively easy to find out what the tracks were and this naturally led to wanting to hear more of Donald Byrd. That eventually led me to this album.

This is Jazz-Funk at its very best, and as other reviewers have indicated, the production work of the Mizzel Brothers stands out. Jazz purists might be tempted to scoff at the notion of this strange hybrid, a fusion of Jazz, Funk and other elements of popular Black music, but for listeners seeking 'the groove' this album will draw you in through its sheer listenability ... This very moderately priced box of extremely interesting and diverse jazz performances doesn't get 5 stars from me only because it is not sufficiently equipped with the recording information...

Otherwise, it's a good buy indeed, with music mixing swing, cool, be-bop, hard-bop and other styles very freely, to suite the tastes of the more liberal jazz fans who love challenges.

Louis Malle's Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud (Lift to the Scaffold) was in many ways the definitive Nouvelle Vague crime movie (later relations included Bande a Part and Tirez Sur La Pianiste); it's soundtrack was also definitively 'new wave.' The great Miles Davis, breaking from his earlier collaborations with Charlie Parker & Gil Evans was on a three-week tour of Europe & somehow ended up scoring Malle's movie in a single-mythic night-time session (which very much seemed to mirror the improvised nature of many New Wave works). Jazz would also be key to several other Nouvelle Vague films, famously A Bout de Souffle (1959) & films such as Le Souffle Au Coeur & Lacombe, Lucien- which used the music of Charlie Parker & Django Rheinhardt respectively.

YES! This really is some smokin Jazz. When the musicians let rip on this it really does take you somewhere else.

If you like Jazz you must own this. If you like the guitar you must own this. If you like music you must own this. If you think you don't like jazz, listen to this record, and if you dont like it, you really dont like jazz.
This is REAL virtuosity on display here rather than pure technical ability. Steve Vai would give anything to play like this!

Brilliant!

This album recorded at the 1963 Antibes Jazz Festival with a band who'd been together for just a few weeks is a neglected classic. There is electrifying playing from the whole quintet which includes the vastly underrated tenorist George Coleman and the brilliant 17 year-old drummer Tony Williams who "lit a big fire under everyone in the group" according to Miles in his autobiography. Ralph J.Gleason has written that Miles was so delighted when he first heard this recording that he almost wore out the test pressings!
This marvellous CD which includes a bonus track and has a remarkable playing time of over 80 minutes is an essential part of any Miles Davis collection.

That is what Coltrane is on the title track of this album. At what is already a ferocious tempo Coltrane kicks into his first solo playing a double time solo where it seems every chord change has every possible note combination played. I was absolutely astonished when I first heard this. Ira Gitler used the term 'Sheets of Sound' to describe Coltrane's playing, and I'm sure it was this title track that gave him the idea. However don't misunderstand this album. This isn't the Coltrane of the mid 1960's onwards, where I do struggle to keep up with his more avant-garde playing.

The tunes on this album are very strong. 'Naima' is a beautiful slow number that hints at the ballads record he would record a year or two later. The vastly under-rated Wynton Kelly is the only ... Read More:
