Some people have been disappointed that this project did not realise its full hybrid potential, and perhaps not unduly so. However, we must remember that the music of Miles' electric period was already inflected with Indian musical structures and musicians, irrespective of the extent of explicitly Indian instrumentation (surely part of its appeal to me). On Miles From India I will concede that some tracks are more successful than others in their achievement of indo-jazz synergy. But for example, Spanish Key is absolutely incredible- a really distinctive interpretation with a pronounced Indian inflection, and reason alone to purchase this. As an obsessive about this era of Miles' music, this rendition really caught my attention, filling me with ... Read More:

From the very opening moments of these remarkable recordings, one is at once struck by the sense that a moment of historical importance is being witnessed all over again. Blue Note's Alfred Lion, in his unerring vision, decided to record Art Blakey's new band at Birdland in February 1954. He had rightly sensed that something new, something thrillingly new, was afoot. Though Charlie Parker was still a year from death, bop was demanding an invigorating lease of life to take it into a new dimension of expressiveness and vitality. The resulting transformation of the now hackneyed music into something raw, urgent and fizzing with energy was to be popularly called "hard bop", and was thrust into public consciousness on this record, and its ... Recorded in the late 70's, but only widely issued fairly recently, the piano is an essential disc for fan's of herbie hancock. Whilst not necessarily the first cd a curious listener should pick up (blue note discs like maiden voyage and empyrian isles, or the funky headhunters album are the best starting place), it comes highly recommended.

Basically falling into 2 sections, the cd consists of 3 unique readings of jazz standards (my funny valentine, someday my prince will come and on green dolphin street) and 4 originals. The approach to the standards is very laid back and modern in outlook (especially in terms of the voicing) , but with the driving sense of ryhthm common to herbie's playing.

The originals show the most ... Read More:

Jazz musicians, from Louis Armstrong to Miles Davis covering Michael Jackson's "Human Nature", often used standards as launch pads for explorations, and Trane does exactly that in this wonderful album. The key track is of course the title track: you will probably know it from The Sound Of Music (though I did not when I first heard it). But Trane makes it all his own: in a 3/4 waltz time, Trane takes the harmony with a soprano sax (a gift from Miles Davis) while McCoy Tyner plays some astonishing long solos on a close-miked piano and comps the rhythm while Trane solos to see the song out. What's fascinating is the way that Trane plays with the melody, bending and misshaping it, and how Tyner's solo stretches out, almost peering towards infinity, yet never ... Read More:

Throughout the 1950's and 60's, Blue Note issued hundreds of records that came to define what became known as "Hard Bop." Unlike other labels, they paid the musicians for their rehersal time and the tightness of the bands reflects this. I suspect that this contributes alot to the on-going popularity of records that are now over forty years old.
On this CD, Art Blakey leads his firey Jazz Messengers through four extended tracks on a testosterone-fuelled session that, for many , defines what "Hard Bop" was all about. There is little room for subtlety in this set and the opening title track sets the tone. This is undoubtedly the finest Messeneger's line-up with Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard and Curtis Fuller completing the front line. (Shorter is particularly ... Read More:

This is my first Cannonball album - I was aware of his stuff with Miles Davis, but this is the first album I bought with him as leader. It pretty much does the job efficiently - grooving very intensely in several places (especially Sticks: Cannonball's solo is sort of Charlie Parker meets James Brown - one to savour, and much too short). Not exactly intellectually challenging - but then the "brainy" stuff from the Sixties is fairly unlistenable now - but tuneful and entertaining.

Just one question - how did Zawinul get the gig? He's pretty terrible in this, and his tunes are pretty ho-hum too. One of those mysteries, I guess.

Words cannot really do justice to this album. If it catches you just right it is all about the experience and not some intellectual definition. It's a classic for a reason and a great introduction to Miles Davis and jazz in general. Lower the lights, open a bottle of red wine and put this on, it's what jazz is all about!
