61.Incredible Jazz Guitar by: Wes Montgomery

Music : Incredible Jazz Guitar

Wes Montgomery can be described as the greatest jazz guitarist to appear after Charlie Christian's death (he also used some harmonic elements borrowed from Django Reinhardt.)

Entirely self-taught, he developed a unique style eschewing fingerpicking and plectrum techniques. Instead, he picked tunes with his thumb. His playing of unison octaves and parallel chords gave him a distinctively soft, well-rounded guitar tone.

After signing to the Riverside label in 1959, he released several outstanding recordings which were revelations to jazz lovers.

Among these recordings, "The Incredible Jazz Guitar", recorded in January 1960, is - arguably - his best album. Accompanied by gifted and experienced musicians ... Read More:

Mr Bungle. With a name like that, you know its gonna be odd, or maybe humorous? Alas, the band have some cool toilet humour included. Some of the talking sections at the end of songs hit the mark, most fall flat however. I dont like the circus sections of the songs. It cheesy, plain and simple. Sometimes the record breaks down into cacophony such as #My Ass is on Fire, which I really enjoy until the 6 minute mark then it gets pointless.

However, there are some excellent songs on here, such as Slowly Growing Deaf, Carousel (which reminds me a bit of Madness when Pattons voice kicks in), The Girls of Porn (extremely humorous lyrics) and Quote Unquote.

They are definately unfocused on a lot of these songs however. I rate Mr ... Read More:

By the time of the recordings of these pieces in 1967 John Coltrane was travelling farther and father out into the musical hinterland of free jazz. This set of recordings with drummer Rashid Ali is about as far as you can get. The music here is wild and powerful and at times violent as Ali and Coltrane at times seem to battle for the space in the music.

This is improvisation of the first order. Coltrane's playing squawks, honks, runs, and stutters its way around the clattering cachophony of Ali's frenetic drumming. Easy listening it isn't. It does seem to be a statement and it is fascinating to wonder where Coltrane would have gone next with his music beacuase listening to this you sometimes conclude that this was something of a final statement. ... I recently wrote a review of "Sweetnighter" which I consider a bona fide classic album. Reminded me to revisit this old favourite. And it is, simply, terrific. Although Wayne Shorter is still producing great music, this is easily my favourite album. The sheer "bite" or agressiveness in the playing and that kinda setting your teeth on edge tone that I love with some guitar work (e.g. "Zuma") are here in abundance. The quality of the playing and composition is, to my ears, superb. Great to hear a couple of alternative takes, which are well worth having in their own right, though the preferred takes are probably better, and which give you an insight into how much was "written" and how much was improvised. They also show you the level of inventiveness in these musicians. ... Read More:

... and, wow, it really is...

Showing Coltrane's mellow and romantic side (also seen on his "My Favorite Things"), this album brings the great and precise vocalist Hartman into Coltrane's classical band and together they create something so delicate and subtle I hardly believed it when I heard it. This means that Tyner's intelligent piano and Garrison's and Jones' unobtrusive rhythmical support are also essential for this musical triumph.

Is it modern jazz? Is it musically conservative? Answers to both questions should probably be in the affirmative; great music is often too complex to be placed in neatly divided groups...

Coltrane's tone is, I must admit, far from being among my favorite sounds in jazz, but on this album even that aspect of ... Read More:

This album is the quintessential dinner jazz album. Forget all those lame Best of Jazz compilations. Jobim's original Bossa Nova tracks are the only option for the smoothest, most elegant and sensual songs that everyone in the room can kick back to.
