This is one of my favourite studio albums by the John Coltrane quartet and, in some ways, preferable to his famous 'A Love Supreme' which was recorded a few months later. Coltrane is in a melancholy and meditative mood and his tenor sounds majestic on the profound 'Wise One'. 'Lonnie's Lament' is a lyrical and haunting piece, while 'The Drum Thing' is a fascinating feature for the astonishingly polyrhythmic Elvin Jones. All in all, a deeply moving album by this beautifully integrated quartet and 'Crescent' is an essential CD for anyone who has 'A Love Supreme' in their collection.

There was a trend in Sixties jazz, led by Miles Davis and promulgated by some of his closest followers (including Wayne Shorter) towards introspection and, frankly, considerable dreariness. A number of the Blue Note albums by Shorter and Herbie Hancock could be pretty heavy going. Individual tunes would shine, becoming immortal standards (Maiden Voyage, Dolphin Dance, Footprints, Speak No Evil) but you often had to navigate through a lot of tuneless noodling to get there. All well and good in terms of artistic integrity, but not always much fun for the listener. Adam's Apple is, in some ways, not the best known Shorter album of this period (this is the first review on Amazon, after all) but to my mind it is the best. Why? Decent tunes. ... Read More:

Since Jimmy Smith died in February 2005. I thought it would be respectful to give something back for the great albumn he has created. He is a great Jazz electric Organ player(you dont get many of those knockin around do you)He starts of the tune with a very rhythmical riff that sounds almost country western you just want to start dancing to it. Then comes in the tune with the great Stanley Turrentine. The picture on the front is amazingly cool and just says so much about the albumn, modest calm new and funky. If you have got a few minutes of spare time buy the album and listen to back at the chicken shack it will put a smile on your face.

It doesn't get any better: gorgeous, lush strings; rich vocals, and top notch songs by first class songwriters. This album is one of the most pleasurable listening experiences I've enjoyed in ages. Shirley Horn's voice is like fine chocolate, and Bill Henderson offers warm, comfortable readings of his choices of song. And don't miss the final track on the album, when Charlie Haden himself sings "Wayfaring Stranger" in a most understated, heartfelt mode.

That is what the commentry at the back of this record says and it is hard to disagree. This is a great introduction to the great mans music, if you like Jazz Funk and Soulful vocals over Jazzy Grooves this is for you. Probably the most know song on this collection is Dominoes, but to be honest I think every song is great. My personal stand outs are You and Music, Think Twice and Wind Parade. Just enjoy.
