Black Sunday made Cypress Hill's connection to rock & roll more explicit, with its heavy metal-like artwork and noisier, more dissonant samples (including, naturally, stoner icons Black Sabbath). It's a slightly darker affair than its groundbreaking predecessor, with the threats of violence more urgent and the pot obsession played to the hilt (after all, it was a crucial part of their widespread appeal). Apart from those subtle distinctions, the sound of Black Sunday is pretty much the same as Cypress Hill, refining the group's innovations into an accessible bid for crossover success. In fact, it's a little startling how often Black Sunday recycles musical ideas and even lyrical catch phrases from the endlessly inventive debut. And the rock ... Read More:

after jay z had dropped reasonable doubt, a classic in every sense, and in my lifetime, a very underrated good album,it seemed he had fallen off, he dropped hard knock life vol, 2, which lost major points for having a guest appearance on every song, and the terrible(and i hate to say it) vol.3, jay z obviously took a long look at his mistakes, and made 1 hell of an album, this is album is a(as is the title) a blueprint for modern rap, jay z hired some brilliant producers for this, such as just blaze, the then unknown kanye west(this album made him the most wanted producer aside dr dre) and timbaland, and is lyrically excellent on it too, this album is extremely complete, as in, jay z is not afraid to show his soul to the world, and he raps about a variety ... Excellent compilation of Craig Armstrongs film music.
Armstrong truly is a rare talent in film music scoring - these days, each composer whose name you might recognise has their own tricks that crop up time and again. Hans Zimmer has the 'soulful voice as instrument and Wagnerian epic themes', Jerry Goldsmith has the 'lush string sound with simple effective meolodies', Vangelis has the epic soaring themes market cornered...
But Craig Armstrong truly uses a large repertoire of tools to achieve whatever is needed for a certain film. This album contains romantic soft melodies gently played (Love Actually Glasgow Love theme), Driving modern dance style beats ('Ball' from Plunckett and Maclean), epic Carl Orff style choir ... I've never reviewed a c.d on here before but thought this merited some sort of response. Sit in your car, turn this up very loud and enjoy. This has been on repeat in my car for the past week and I still love it. Admittedly there are some dodgy songs on here and I'm not sure what he was thinking letting Lemar on this c.d, however, overall this is everything I was hoping it would be. "So now you're listening to the soundtrack to a tainted victory, the same words that brought him the bright lights and the fame" Great, buy it.

Mr Scruff (known as Andy Carthy to his mum) is a multi talented DJ producer who is very difficult to pigeon hole (good the way I like it) - his productions on Keep It Unreal are dreamy and very funky, with crazy samples from children's TV of the 50s and 60s.

The finest moment on here for me is Midnight Feast with it's delightful xylophone and jazzy feel, this is a good one for when you want to drift to sleep, and could probably be fun if you're a DJ cutting between tracks - or for scratchin'. Another favourite of mine is Get A Move On, with the sample of an old country record - it's bluesy yet jazz based melody is just fun and can get anyone dancing like a loon.

Altogether this is an excellent album to chill out to late night, to enjoy ... Read More:

Taking its cues from a wide variety of genres while remaining steadfastly accessible and catchy, this is one of my all-time faves. More or less any track could have been picked off this album and it still would have been a hit - there's such little filler on it.

It's quite remarkable to think how far Damon Albarn has come from those early Blur days. He's certainly done a lot better than one-time rivals the Gallaghers, who haven't yet twigged that you can't have a hit with the same song over and over again.

As a 40 something white male, I'm not the demographic for this album, and my normal reaction to the likes of "Troubled Singer" Amy Winehouse, Kate Allen, Lily Nash etc is to flip the off button.

So I was surprised - and pleased - to find that this is a very good album on the whole. Its good points are
1. The Music - though it is full of the currently fashionable horns and 60s soul sound, it doesn't sound contrived or consciously "retro". On the contrary, it sounds very contemporary - the sort of thing that gives "pop" a good name.
2. Singer Imani Coppola has a great voice
3. When the songs work - which is at least 7 of the 11 tracks - they are catchy, full of humour and wry observation.

On the negative side, there are a few let ... Read More:

Listening to this album for the first time as I write this review. Tis album is great. Buy it!!

I don't care if these guys are commercial because wvwn the most underground of Hip Hop have to become commercial to make their $$$ so they are all just wannabe gangbangers.

To make the cash they hae to 'sell their souls'

After buying their new album a couple of years ago, i decided to check out their first 2 albums. Their debut album quite frankly is boring it has 2 good songs on it the rest sounded this same. This album however is deffinetly better. The songs here differ from each other, and everything has improved. Best songs are My Plague, The Heretic Anthem & Iowa. This album is very heavy, but brutal? who knows. But the thing that pisses me off is people keep comparing Slipknot to Slayer that's just not right, Slayer are one of the greatest metal bands to hit the planet yeah slipknot are good their no slayer. So overall, indeed a great album much better then their debut. A great starting point for new slipknot fans.
