Much has been said by this British duo that made probably the biggest noise in dance in 1999. And they've often pronounced Prince as their idols and inspirations for their music. So was this album worth the hype? For the most part, yes.

Like Prince, Jaxx manage to take all kinds of diverse stylings and mix it into their unique brand of house. It all coheres well, unlike other bands that just achieve a giant mess. Their diversity is shown in the vocoder and flamenco guitar hit "Rendez-vu," which amazingly garnered little attention in the mainstream press during the year of Cher's "Believe" and "Blue" by Eiffel 65. You also have the fun if unintelligible regga-rap of "Jump & Shout" and the funky attitude of the smash "Red Alert," ... Read More:

Music : Back to the Old Skool
Oh dear, oh dear. It really does seem like the Ministry of Sound label have lost their way. There was a time when they released quality dance compilations such as the 'Sessions' series. But now, it just seems that they are content on cashing in on any scene or re-vive fad, and their latest release 'Back to the Old Skool' is a prime example of this.

'Old Skool' music may have different interpretations, but I suspect for the majority this genre recalls those songs that defined white gloves, light sticks and dance music of the early 90's. The album has the usual anthems of this time, like 'Set you free' by N-Trance, and Liquid's 'Sweet Harmony', along with the odd forgotten gem such as Cola Boy's '7 ways to love'.

However, the ... Read More:

All of Inner City's original classic house/dance tracks are included on this CD. Since all of the songs date back to 1988-1992, many of these would be otherwise difficult to find. "Good Life" is easily and deservedly the most well known of these, with "Big Fun", "Do You Love What You Feel", and "Ain't Nobody Better" all taking you back to a particular place in time where the Inner City sound was considered fresh. Unfortunately for Inner City, they were unable to match the success of their first 4-5 hits, and listening to this CD will show you why. Most of the remaining tracks seem to rehash previously successful formulae which end up sounding like mediocre imitations of earlier hits. However, the lesser-known track "Pennies From Heaven" is perhaps ... Read More:

Beach House is one of my favourite in Kandi's series . For 69 the sound's unmistakably beach house's lighter dance grooves exploring this unique chilled mid to up tempoe trip through, laid back house, latin , jazzy and electronic baleiric pop flavours, without going in to overkill. This is more of a vintage Kandi collection for the old Kandi followers with favourite names such as MJ Cole, Miguel Migs,Physics also ,other poolside movers from Roachford and Hotchip The Hed Kandi team have brought out another winner for the summer pre- club .party warm up to go well with Served Chilled, for the after hours wind down

I think that I like this album because it's just a lot of fun. Although not my usual fare I appreciate any sort of music where the artists don't take themselves too seriously and disappear up their own fundamental while churning out the same thing you've heard time and time before.

Basement Jaxx never lose sight of two important things, firstly that an album has to have some variation to keep you interested, and secondly it has to be ENTERTAINING. 2 great tracks on the album are 'Where's your Head at?' and 'Get Me Off' and it's indicative of how good the album is that the tracks are good for different reasons.

Anyway, not one to over analyse, one to stick in the CD player and turn the volume up on...

The real deal fruity French cheese feel, it gets no smoother than this. Considerably more old skool and disco'fied then Dimitri's MixMag Live effort from a few years back. Disco, funk, soul and Latino influences abound and as a package it works very well. Not the sort of compilation that's gonna change any drum & bass fan's clichéd opinions about house music, but if you enjoy the fruity end of house (or European 'real' house) then this is the one for you. A high quality compilation, but as I say, fruity as all hell.

Staggered no-one has reviewed this yet. Quite simply the best mix of the year. Thrilling, involving, unusual in parts but funky and grooving throughout, outstanding. A must buy.
