Richard Ashcroft has never been one to undersell his own brilliance - his solo career may have been weak, and the first two Verve albums excellent, but on Urban Hymns the hype finally justified the mouth. Just as the Britpop bubble was about to burst, the Verve reformed for one last album, to sign off at their peak (although, obviously, they have since reformed again). Urban Hymns is the distillation of everything great about the Verve, but with an extra poppy edge. Wow! Who are these guys?! They seem to have taken everything great from the last four decades of pop, whizzed it up and turned out something totally, thrillingly original. I hope they'll be huge, because this is the best new thing I've heard in ages.

Coming across this album was a joy.Having read the postive reviews in music scribes,I decicded to give it a go.Man,it hits you like a sucker punch.Wheeled in by the opening piano chords to "Fake Empire" all the way through to the hymen-like "Gospel" this is an album of serious substance.Songs like "Brainy"a tale of stalker("You know I keep your fingerprints in a pink folder in the middle of my table") and "Apartment Story"("Oh we're so disarming darling, everything we did believe is diving diving diving diving off the balcony") stand out.This band has succeeded in not only writing great sons,but achieving a groove to them that fits Joy Division in their peak.The relentless drum beats ,coupled with the drilling bass lines make these songs tight.There ... This is most definately an album that deserves at least 3 listenings to from everyone who says they like listening to music because it is very very very good. The opening title track 'Bombtrack' is a perfect track to listen to to understand this album because it is almost like a round up of everything to come in the rest of the album. Driving guitar riffs and licks (yes licks) from Morello and angsty hip lyrics from Zach. In fact the only thing it really doesn't convey about the album is quite the intricate brilliance of Morello's soloing ability and guitar playing. The best most energetic, album I've heard for years. been playing this album time after time and after over 100 plus listens it gets better and better. The '59 Sounds rocks. Don't miss out on this one. Really looking forward to seeing them live in Manchester in 3 weeks. Five stars really isn't enough. As Jon Landau said, 'I've heard the future of Rock and Roll....'

Oh no i'm in a state of high dudgeon, despair and dysphoria as this grandiose drivel cuts through my ear drums. Its quite possible that this is the most disturbing example of music as commerce i have ever heard. Chad Kroeger is an avaricious money mad pirate who specialises in tawdry, inept riffs and stultifying hooks that serve no purpose other than to extort money out of jocks and other asinine consumers. If you want truly profound, intuitive songwritng then avoid the music of this banal incubus while you still have the ability to feel!
