i grew up in the next village to these boys and their first album is annd always will be,there on my top five must haves. like so many othere one-hit wonders, they have proved over the years that they peaked with the first absolutely magic album , and then the rot set in. this album no longer is filled with creative lyrics and must listen to riffs, other than bartender and takes clothes off. this is just dross and fluff for fans who know no better to listen to and pretend they love it. sorry boys , its time to let it go now before the real damage to your reputations is done.

I simply don't understand why this over-rated album is always held up as the benchmark of Morrissey/The Smiths' greatness. There are only two standout classic tracks on The Queen Is Dead - I Know It's Over and There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.

Frankly Mr Shankly is a dire novelty song that sounds like it was written by Gilbert O' Sullivan, Vicar In A Tutu is unlistenably dreadful, Never Had No One Ever and Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others are totally forgettable fillers.

Strangeways Here We Come is The Smiths album that stands up best to repeated listening - musically it's more innovative, lyrically it's less contrived. It's an altogether more emotionally and intellectually engaging experience.

I have the first album and as a lot of people have said the Joy Division sounds are there at the first listen but frankly once you listen to the Editors a bit more it becomes difficult to see any likeness.

This second album is a bit more melodic than the first but im amazed how it has grown on me. Frankly once I really got into it the darkness you hear at first lifts. This album is emotional - not dark or depressing - and I love it for that. Nothing like Joy Division who I am a fan of but can only take in small doses.

If you are open minded (and yes the lyrics are pretty simple) then this album is worth a shot. Give it time.

Having achieved moderate levels of success with their self-titled debut and Rated R, Queens Of The Stoneage finally hit the big leagues with their third album, Songs For The Deaf. The last album featuring the revolving door policy of old, the QOTSA group on this album features Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri, ex-Screaming Trees frontman Mark Lanegan and most notably, with the Foo Fighters in disarray, Dave Grohl making a welcome return to drums.

Songs For The Deaf finds Homme streamlining the sexy yet doom-laden groove of the previous two albums into something almost perfect. Mixed as a shift between radio stations from song to song, Homme covers more styles here than ever before. Big hit 'No One Knows' is a straight-out pop song; 'Hangin' Tree' is an unsettling, ... Like a lot of people I was very hesitant as to whether 9 would live up to its predecessor and had to give it a few listens before I could pass judgement. Although in some aspects it is similar to O- "Dogs" possesses an innocence that would fit nicely with Damien's first album- to me it seems a lot more mature and some of the perfect, beautiful lyrics have been replaced with some more realistic and matter-of-fact ones which are actually just as powerful. For example the chorus of Rootless Tree (which involves a lot of swearing) to me is incredibly realistic and almost like a converstaion- "so * you and all we've been through, I said leave it, it's nothing to you, and if you hate me then hate me so good that you can let me out of this hell when you're around". Ok so i have been browsing the other reviews written by other people, there not that good are they? I think this album is a product you either love or hate, for me i love this album its very different to the previous stereophonics music, i must admit i was a little dissapointed that there wasnt much rock and roll - the songs can almost be seen as a little depressing, but it has grown on me A LOT!
To put things short, buy the album if you are a stereophonics fan, give it chance to grow on you, you wont be dissapointed with songs such as mr writer, vegas two times and handbags and the gladrags which is an excellent Rod Stewart cover (almosts sounds like him), but most of all i think this album projects Kelly's unique husky voice.
So i will leave the buying up to you!

This album is another of a growing number of sophisticated, intelligent masterpieces that have all the intelligence and artistry of prog rock but without the pretentions of the first appearance of this genre. Hugh full frontal big soundscapes and in particular the crescendo of "Atom" reminicent of A Day in the Life by the Beatles including an air raid siren no less...... Play loud and just let it all wash over you.... surreal
