This album was a revelation when I first heard it a couple of years after Cobain's death. For the most part I hadn't connected with Nirvana's grungier sound. The Unplugged format provides a sparse and paired back sound, releasing the raw power and passion of Cobain's voice. Favorite's are Something In the Way, Dumb, On a Plain and most especially the cover of the Meat Puppets Plateau. As others have mentioned the closing cover of Leadbelly's Where Did You Sleep Last Night is remarkable in its intensity.

Unlike many other live albums the post production has left all the chat and banter between Cobain and the band in the mix; this allows the listener to feel part of a very special concert. In conclusion you don't have to be a ... Read More:

The second album from Alter Bridge had a very, very hard task... follow up 'One Day Remains'. How many bands falter and fail to even match their debut offering? These guys don't. Simple as that.

This may be more gritty than ODR but that don't mean they compromise the melody or quality of song. I'll admit it took 2 or 3 plays to appreciate some tracks, but that's because these guys have progressed.

Where as 'ODR' is instantly etched into your mind with its catchy choruses and odd meaty riff, this album grabs you by the throat with tracks 'Come To Life' and 'White Knuckles'; comforts you with 'Brand New Start' and 'Before Tomorrow Comes'; melts you with 'Watch Over You' and just simply catches your breath with 'Blackbird'.

Don't get me wrong, these are great songs, but this time around they've been ruined by dreadful remastering. We didn't need another Smiths compilation anyway....of the existing ones, Louder Than Than Bombs has the most enduring track selection.

Someone asked why is this CD is brokes comparison with the Grateful Dead.
The answer is ridiculously simple - some of the songs sit comfortably alongside the best the Dead had to offer. Go ask Phil Lesh (Dead bassist) - he regularly includes Magnolia Mountain, Let it Ride & cold roses in his "& Friends" shows.

What these (and the rest of the CD)share with the Dead is that they are rock solid tunes. That means that you can play them in most anyway and they sound not less than good, generally stand out and sometimes extraordinary. They can be short or long and can stand a wayward approach - with Ryan this is a distinct advantage.

The CD is fab not because it is a pastiche but because it genuinely harnesses the vibe of the Dead (at ... Read More:

Have just got back from seeing the band live in Brussels so i maybe a little biased. However, the band were awesome. Live or not i'm convinced that if you hearing about the band for the first time, they deserve more than a good listen. If you know the first album then try out the second...impressive stuff. If you ever get the chance to see this band live, do it!

... says the opening track of their new album! Well, they may be the same band, but the sound is very different to the amazing 'A fever you can't sweat out'.

Pretty Odd has a more mainstream, polished feel to it - some may say that they've sold out, and have lost that uniqueness that made them so fresh and exciting just a couple of years ago, but I would say that although different, it's not necessarily a bad thing.

It took me a few listens before it grew on me (but then so did the first album) but after the 3rd or 4th time, it really started to get me, and now it's a constant companion on the journey to work - its amazing!

Just don't write them off being giving it a chance, or you may just live to regret it...

Initially, I found this album to be disappointingly bland. Each song seemed to sound alike, with no stand-out tracks. This turned out to be a good omen; all my favourite albums are not immediately likeable. I could really appreciate the quality of 'Silent Cry' after four listens. It is quite an epic sound, with universal lyrics. 'Sonorous' gives a nod to the old grunge days; 'Into The Blue' has an indie disco influence; 'Tracing Lines' is upbeat pop. The guitars and rhythms are heavy, which signals a new burst of confidence, if not a return to the pre-CIS sound. However, a bit of piano or keyboard would have been welcome at points! The two extra tracks on the deluxe edition are probably not worth it, though, unless you are a completist.

A lot of people describe this as Jack and Meg White's finest accomplishment to date. Where it is impressive, it doesn't have the same fluidity as its predecessor, 'White Blood Cells'. However, it's nearly as good. Opener 'Seven Nation Army' has an intimidating, imposing bassline, and the sheer furious tempo of 'Black Math' are both impressive. 'There's No Home For You Here' is a bit 'Queen' but falls below the standard of the two previous songs. 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' is brilliant. It starts quietly enough, but explodes during the choruses, and towards the end with Jack White's wailing guitar. 'In The Cold, Cold Night' is Meg's turn on vocals, and it shows as a weak point on the album. Track six, 'I Want To Be The Boy To Warm Your Mother's Heart' sees Jack back behind the mic. It's a ...
