this is my second Nitin CD having started with Prophecy back in 2001 which I received courtesy of Pete Waddingham at V2 Records A&R and played a lot on my local radio stations...it's truly lamentable that I didn't get any of his other work until now, 6 years later. This is a different album indeed to Prophecy and a wealth again of guest vocalists. I was transported back to my fave New Orleans by the snappy blues intro to Dead Man then smiley and amazed at the smooth switch to eastern indian vocals and themes within a 'blues' track.. a classic example of the blending of genres which Nitin presents so well. This is followed up by the recited raga like Rag Doll then launches into the wonderful swirl of indian faux 'celtic' orchestrations of Mausam, ... Read More:

I'm not sure why the decision was taken to ignore chronological sequence, but CD 1 kicks off with the group-titled April 1957 album, before regressing to the earlier "Django", noteworthy for the four-part "La Ronde Suite" and for drummer Kenny Clarke's last studio appearance with the quartet. The second CD contains two 1956 albums; the earlier stately "Fontessa" which drew inspiration from the improvised form of the Renaissance commedia dell'arte, and the August "Music Inn" session at which clarinettist Jimmy Giuffre guested on three tracks. This is essentially cerebral music, appreciation of which is aided by the crisp and clear remastering. A considerable bargain.

...nothing better to warm the cockles on a cold winters day. Really cheering stuff if you like it slightly quirky, and let's face it English eccentricity can't be beaten when delivered as the Temperance Seven do.

The US jazz trio plus vocalist take on a whole host of covers, mainly from a rock background, and including songs by Yes, Pink Floyd, Wilco, Heart and even the Bee Gees.

And it works very well indeed. If you're used to the originals, these versions are something of a shock, but this difference makes them interesting and original.

I just never get tired of listening to this. Completely addictive. At first it seems unbearably dark, even after Tilt, but the humour slowly emerges. To quote the first song "You could easily picture it in the current top ten". Er...not really, and just as well. A picturesque nightmare.

This album is simply Sinatra at his very best. If, like me, you starting listening to Sinatra because you liked his classics, like New York New York and My Way, then you are in for a real treat. As good as the above are, this album showcases Sinatra's special talent. Each track is given the treatment, he carries the beat and your feet just cannot stop tapping.

The album is without doubt one of his very best. No Sinatra collection would be complete without it.

Some rave about Ella Fitzgerald, her tonal purity and mirth, but say she could lack emotional depth (not sure I agree). Some rave about Billie Holliday, but have to cede that she had a narrow range, although she was a groundbreaking stylist. Sarah Vaughan was the third great female voice of jazz, and believe you me, she lacked nothing!

This album is a wonderful budget introduction to one of the most remarkable voices of all time. Her range and her sheer musical intelligence are unsurpassable.

In all honesty these have to be some of the most moving pieces I have ever listened to.As described in the title Charlie is among family and friends and the entire album resonates with that atmosphere. You can easily tell that everyone feels very much "at home" and there is an obvious lack of competing for first place. Bruce Hornsby on piano and Pat Metheny's measured acoustic guitar playing are absorbing. The Sally Gardens track almost reduced me to tears.Simply beautiful. I'm still recovering. Thanks Charlie.
