Some rave about Ella Fitzgerald, her tonal purity and mirth, but say she could lack emotional depth (not sure I agree). Some rave about Billie Holliday, but have to cede that she had a narrow range, although she was a groundbreaking stylist. Sarah Vaughan was the third great female voice of jazz, and believe you me, she lacked nothing! This album is a wonderful budget introduction to one of the most remarkable voices of all time. Her range and her sheer musical intelligence are unsurpassable.

When you are looking for something you can sit and listen to with lights dimmed and drink at hand, then this is surely it. Sinatra's voice is at its expressive best, so much so, if you close your eyes you could be on the next bar stool. A superb colection of saloon songs that ranks among Sinatra's best.

In all honesty these have to be some of the most moving pieces I have ever listened to.As described in the title Charlie is among family and friends and the entire album resonates with that atmosphere.You can easily tell that everyone feels very much "at home" and there is an obvious lack of competing for first place. Bruce Hornsby on piano and Pat Metheny's measured acoustic guitar playing are absorbing. The Sally Gardens track almost reduced me to tears.Simply beautiful. I'm still recovering. Thanks Charlie.

This is one of those rare albums that ticks a wide range of boxes almost perfectly. It's groovy enough to dance to, varied enough to listen, mellow enough to have on in the background to and detailed enough to withstand repeated listening. I keep coming back to this CD, and 8 years since its release, it still sounds fresh. It has to be in my top 5. Buy it now!

I love Herb Alpert. The best known stuff on this album are the likes of the superlatively bouncy Spanish Flea, the sublime A Taste of Honey, the energetic Tijuana Taxi, Tetris theme Zorba the Greek and of course the theme to the original Casino Royale (the one with David Niven) which is so clever it hurts. But there's nothing on this album that doesn't delight. Mostly it's instrumental, brass band work and very good brass it is. Like a Mariachi band. It's jolly and fun, and it gets me in a good mood and that makes it pretty fab stuff.

I originally bought this album as a boxed set of three LP's, Kind of Blue, Porgy and Bess were the other two. It tends to be loathed by "true believers" largely, I think, because it was one of the most popular. Therefore: it was a sore trial to the sort of deaf elitists that you find at Jazz and Orchestral music events. (People who clap harder as the music gets worse.) It does have it's faults, the over use of castanets, which is like adding atmosphere with ketchup. The gushing orchestration which pervades the collection like cheap perfume in dance-hall. Occasional shrieking trumpet - where MD definitely looses the thread. It's still a great album and well worth a listen. It maybe the weakest of the three albums mentioned. It's still ... Read More:
