121.Beyond Skin by: Nitin Sawhney
June 11, 2001
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

>>More Details
Music : Beyond Skin
I've never reviewed an album on Amazon before, but I have to just stop by and echo the comments of almost everyone else here.... A superb album, where melodic piano notes intertwine beautifully with Indian tabla and Spanish guitar, underpinned by a drum- and- bassy line.

Yes Sawhney does put across a strong political message throughout the album, but I feel the soundbites really add something to an already excellent piece of work.

Tracks 1,2,5,& 7 are particular favourites of mine.

Gotan's first collection "La Revancha del Tango" was an irresistibly gut-grabbing, loin-twitching, bass-loping, dub-tango hybrid winner from the first listen, invariably prompting responses of "What it THIS? I LOVE it".

"Lunático" is a much less in-your-face proposition. I could barely wait to get it out of its packaging, but then I struggled to get into the music itself. Mostly less meaty than "La Revancha" and more varied - tricksier, even. It took some chance random plays on the iPod to insinuate a couple of the songs into my ears again. Then I wanted more. Badly. And now I rate it just as more-ish as "La Revancha".

It juxtaposes the sweet, warm-deadpan voice of Cristina Vilallonga on some tracks (Amor Porteno, ... Read More:

Forgive the tital, but how exactly do I define an album such as this, or indeed an artist like Mingus? This is the most undoubted five-star I have ever given, because, unlike most art, which either seems clear and gives you a good impression, or seems clear but gives you a banal impression, this does not seem clear ( in any of the multiple meanings of the term) , but gives you a transcendentally impressed feeling afterwards.
Certainly, it does seem quite gloomy. The title makes me think of some sort of lost scripture, with depressing implications for the fate of mankind, and the music is a series of movements circulating around the theme of damnation and torture in chains. The sounds which emerge: thundering, percussive drums, screaming ... Read More:

Every now and then, and by that I mean five years or so, I find an exceptional new piece of music thanks to a review of some sort. A piece of music I would otherwise have been unlikely to stumble across. The kind of stuff they don't play on the radio. But I will read a review, usually in a newspaper, and it will get to me so much that I will have to buy that piece of music to find out if it as good as the review makes it sound. and it ends up blowing my wig off.

This is such a piece of music.

I have the Guardian newspaper to thank for pointing me to this amazing CD by the Japanese trumpeter and arranger, Jun Miyake.

There is bossa nova, schmaltz, stuff that sounds a bit trip-hoppy, chanson, Bulgarian voices, jazz. ... Read More:

Unlike the other reviewers I would say that if you want to have a collection that shows you can tell the difference between inspiration and the run-of-the mill then you should have this original release (at least on a major label) and if you must have the rest for purposes of comparison then it is best kept to one side. The rest does not demonstrate anything except the difference, and also that the basic blues can be pretty boring even when played by it's foremost artist. I bought this on vinyl in 1968 and can still remember how disappointed I was a year or so later when I got vol.2. There was a lot more of the same but without the intensity. Whoever compiled this first album did a very good job and got it right every time.
The reason is simply that ... Read More:

This album does take some getting used to. And you do have to take some space from it and go back again with fresh ears before you are able to sort out what's new. The Meeting of the Minds - The Making of Floating Point [2008] DVD, which is awesome, helped clinch the album for me. The first thing you have to deal with is the overwhelming drums and percussion throughout. At first you can't help but think that this is some kind of mistake in the mixing, but persist and you can get used to it. It's a deliberate decision that ensures that the whole album operates at a very high energy level. John's albums have always been about joy and ecstasy and seldom on the mellow side of those values. The album is meant to be rhythmically overwhelming, from start to finish. ... Read More:

Peyroux sounds uncannily like Billie Holiday when she sings - something I'm sure she isn't deliberately setting out to do - but the similarities wander in throughout this lovely album. This is one of those rare recordings where the choice of songs, the voice and the musical arrangements all come together to produce something that sounds under-stated, and it's a joy from beginning to end. Cover versions and original songs go together really well here - it's the sort of CD you can slip on late in the evening for a chill out without the mood being spoiled half-way through an upbeat, raunchy number that spoils the ambience. Seriously good music. Beautifully produced, wonderfully sung.

This set is fantastic, in that it covers Nina`s career from her very first recordings for Bethlehem (including of course My Baby Just Cares For Me)right up to the title track from her last album Single Woman(which has just been reissued with some great bonus tracks). Along the way there are numerous brilliant previously unreleased tracks and live recordings, including several from the terrific A Very Rare Evening set. Needless to say with Nina the performances are committed, sometimes quirky and often electrifying. And the dvd performances are long overdue for issue. What`s not so good is the omission of anything from Nina`s Back, Live at Ronnie Scott`s or Fodder In Her Wings, and it would have been wonderful to have the complete Very Rare Evening; tapes of it exist-the Japanese ... What a class act this man is! a fantastic kalaidascopic cornacopia of a rollercoaster into the smoky realms of Jazztopia! with a cherry on top! I recommend this cd to everyone who has yet to worship at altar of Acker in the church of Bilk!. What people also don't realise is that Acker is also a greco roman wrestling champion at several different weights but gave up to concentrate solely on music, for that we should be gratefull my friends! also a special mention to Chris Barton who plays baritone on several of these tracks and is a very underated musician in his own right. If you like Acker I recommend you try Chris Barton's album " When Sally met Chris, the Stable sessions ". A modern jazz classic!
