The question isn't whether this is a weird branch that Miles Davis wandered off into in the 70's, and do only pseuds like it.

The question is whether this is the best album ever made.

Pharoah's dance knocks most modern orchestral music into a much-needed hole in the ground - its atonal genius - only Stockhausen could even get close to this match of mood and insane key combinations - is unsurpassed.

Bitches brew has a groove so deep that when you really hear it (maybe second listen, maybe third) you almost salute it - its dark, african and american - city and jungle - jesus its superb.

And if you don't like Spanish Key you are very likely dead.

Plenty of others have written helpful summaries of the original album 'Frank', so my contribution is to provide a review of the new 'Super Deluxe Edition', packaged as a box set with a new 17-track bonus disc of 'previously unreleased radio sessions, rare demos and mixes'. This new edition is no doubt aimed mainly at dedicated fans, who will already own the album itself; the problem is that dedicated fans will also already own most of the 'rare' songs included here.

Of the tracks featured on the bonus disc, only a handful are genuinely 'new', and all but one have been heard before in some form. Admittedly, that one unheard song - a cover of the Gershwin classic 'Someone to Watch Over Me' - is absolutely gorgeous, truly sounding like it could ... Read More:

Of all the Pentangle albums, this is by far my favourite - if you could add Cruel Sister & Let No Man Steal Your Thyme to it, it would be perfect! Sally Free & Easy is sublime, and the only song that betters it in my mind is Willy O'Winsbury (the tune of which will be familiar to Fairport fans as it was used to set the words of Farewell Farewell to). The only song I'm not too keen on is the Lady of Carlisle, but then you can't have everything!

I bought this purely on a whim - the shop I was in seemed to be very keen on Russell and were selling this for just a fiver, so what was not to like. Fortunately, for once my intuitions were right and this turned out to be a beezer of an album. I was trying to think of the best way to describe it, given that the washes of luminous reverb and echo that cover Russell's voice and cello render it pretty unclassifiable. The closest I can get is to say its like Nick Drake singing over fragments of Lou Reed's Street Hassle. It really is that good. I'm not saying that it will be everybody's cup of tea, but for anyone looking for beauty bound in the most original of forms, this is for them.

So the last reviewer based his review on listening to one or two tracks down the phone? Hmmm...

This album is superb from start to finish: Jamie's voice is passionate, youthful and earthy and his musicianship unassailable. The little bits of his personality that edge into each song make it highly personal and make you smile.

The songs penned by his brother are particularly good, because of their freshness: 'Twentysomething' is extremely good: just check out the lyrics and you'll realise he's singing about YOU!

Buy it and enjoy!!

At a time when the price of petrol, energy and food seem to be totally out of control, it's good to find great music at a bargain price. At budget price, this two-disc compilation of Basie's best selects four celebrated albums, with APRIL IN PARIS (1956) not only honing in on that classic song but grabbing SHINY STOCKINGS amongst its ten tracks. KING OF SWING (1954) grabs no less than five Neal Hefti compositions like CHERRY POINT, BUBBLES and YOU FOR ME in order to feature the efforts of the best soloists, with the album's ultimate success immediately pointing the way forward for Basie's ongoing style. THE ATOMIC MR. BASIE released in 1957 utilises the mono version for both technical and artistic reasons and THE KID FROM RED BANK, SPANKY and MIDNITE BLUE are all reasons ... Read More:

Gosh, this took me back to my youth, the age of great and good expectations - the late 1950's and early 60's with their unmistakeable sound and sexy undercurrents.

Excellent recordings, great sound and that velvety sultry voice... Do they still make them like this? Don't know; but this double CD deserves to be in everyone's music library and to be listened to.

This is a great album, my personal Santana favourite. However, there is nothing to suggest on the box that this album has actually been remastered, or that anything has been done to 'buff up' the sound, despite another reviewer's praise for the improved sound quality on this release. Maybe this is just a reissue rather than a remaster. If it were the latter surely that fact would be advertised on the packaging.

This is a good selection from the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. The band contains fabulous players; they are really tight, and the solos are excellent. Not only are most of the songs great, but the band's performance of them is second to none. Great to sing along to, and some of the solos, particularly on the clarinet, have really impressed music students I know.

A couple of my favourite tracks aren't on here, but others of my favourites I've not seen elsewhere. All in all, great value for money, good fun to listen to, and very impressive musically. I'm in my 20s, and this band I love in a way that some other similar stuff I can find a bit dated/boring.
