Being an avid jazz fan and a lover of Bach's music I picked album up as a taster and am glad I did!
As all tracks are superb to single one out for praise is hard but Toccata and Fugue is breath-taking.

Listening to some of the songs on this CD reminds me why I'm not a jazz fan. However, I do have most of Cassandra's records because I love the way she embraces her heritage by doing interpretations of blues classics by the likes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters and Fred McDowell. These versions embody the spirit and soul of the originals but update and move the songs on. She also has a way of turning in classy versions of unpromising material, like the Monkeys' "Last train to Clarkesville"

Looking at the tracks on this CD I was really keen to hear what she would do with "Dust my broom" and "St. James Infirmary" - not much and bloody murder it, respectively. The rest of the CD is a bit of a ragbag of jazz standards and show songs ... Read More:

If you want a good starting point in the world of EST (or trio-jazz, for that matter), this may be it!
The sounds, grooves and themes are very diverse; from the country-gospel of 'Believe, beleft, below'(even sounds a little bit like Floyd Kramer at some points)to the jungle of 'Did they ever tell Cousteau'. Absolute highpoint is the exstatic 'Elevation of Love'with an almost scary bass-solo.
It has been said before; there may be 'faster' pianists, and technically more advanced drummers or bassists, but the interplay between the band-members is in a legue of their own!

Buddy Guy celebrates his new recording contract with Silvertone by setting out his stall from the very first track - the title which features some exceptionally fiery guitar playing and there's some lovely fluid guitar playing all over this album. As well as this facet Buddy Guy shows his softer - more "bluesier" side on "Five Long Years" and "Black Night" - the two longest tracks on the album. The album features a stellar cast of guitar greats - Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Mark Knopfler but Buddy Guy's guitar burns the brightest of them all. There's an odd cover here of "Mustang Sally" which is taken a tad slower than normal but works well. The last track - "Remembering Stevie" is in homage to the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan and is a beautiful poignant instrumental. ... Read More:

Below is the review I recently posted on Amazon.com for the Dave Brubeck Take Five SACD. I really felt I should post the reveiw on Amazon.co.uk also, as there appear to be reviews which relate only to the CD release - same story with US Amazon. Surely there must be others out there that could stand up for this superb SACD album??!!

Although I'm not what I consider to be a great fan of jazz, I have enjoyed Dave Brubeck's music for quite some time. For the last two and a half years or so, I have bought almost only high resolution music (DVD-A or SACD), and was determined to buy this disc soon. For a short while, several years ago, I owned the standard CD version of this album - until I donated it to my father-in-law. For anyone reading this reveiw, I can confirm ... Read More:

After hearing the rich variety of musics and experiences in other Sawhney albums, there is nothing here at all. Extremely bland. Even the words don't say anything. The tapestry was so rich before, but this... It's just nothing.

If you've not heard any E.S.T. and piano trio jazz is your kind of thing then this album is for you. In fact if you have any appreciation of great piano or any jazz, this album is probably for you too.

For E.S.T. lovers this album is similar in my mind to Strange Place For Snow - the album that seemed to alert the world to this supremely talented group further than just the jazz realm. The variety on offer here is fantastic - my favourite track continually changes.

All elements of this trio are vital to the E.S.T. mix - and all are bloody great at what they do. If you get the chance to see these guys live then do - I've been once and it's up with the best live acts I've ever seen.

I came to this album already knowing some of Jacques Brel's songs through English translations, and I suppose I was already a sort of proxy fan. Judy Collins, Scott Walker and others popularized Brel songs in the 60's and 70's, but it was still a revelation to me when I was given a vinyl version of this album and heard them sung for the first time by the man himself. All other renditions suddenly paled in comparison with the original. Compare, for example, Terry Jacks' 'Seasons in the Sun' with 'Le Moribund', or any of the many renditions of 'If You Go Away' with 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'. No contest! There are no dud songs on this album. Some of the tunes you will recognise, and those you don't will grow on you. Brel's voice has a biting edge which is particularly suited to the sharpness of the ... Read More:
