Excellent CD & DVD package from Tyner's own Half Note / McCoy Tyner music label with hours of listening and viewing pleasure. The CD is based around the McCoy Tyner trio which consists of himself,Ron carter and Jack DeJohnette with five guitarists guesting on 2, 3 or 4 tracks each. The contrasting style of the guitarists make for a very interesting listen indeed.
First up is Marc Ribot with a very rock/fusion'sh sound which, i must admit doesn't quite sound right with the piano trio but he does solo well though.John Scofield is next and fits in perfectly in my opinion with a great swinging version of "Mr PC" (one of the picks of the album) and a time honoured rendition of "Blues on the corner".Shame he didn't stick around for an extra ... Glenn Miller was a wartime orchestra leader who died in a mysterious airoplane crash, which is explained in the DVD documentary 'Glenn Miller's Last Flight' (*recommended). So, born in 51 as I was, his genre of music was more in tune with my parent's generation, but it overspilled, and we heard quite a lot of it via 78's and the wonderfully drawling James Stewart playing his role in 'The Glenn Miller Story' which seemed to be on TV back then quite often (now also on DVD!)
So, even though the music was cringeworthy as far as our peer's were concerned, (we wouldn't have been 'Hip' in the mid-60's if they knew we held a light for Glenn Miller!), but in all honesty, some of his music gave you the old adrenaline rush / backbone shiver, nevertheless. ... Read More:

Not a bad mix of jazz and pop-music; something like a modernized Frank Sinatra, but with a more emotion in the voice and a bit more variety in arrangements (not better than Sinatra-only different).

The choice of songs is excellent and this is really highly recomended music for romantic evenings or as background for a dinner-party. I would personally prefer a bit more spice and swing, but this is still nice.

Rock Swings is the first of two albums by Paul Anka. The man who famously penned "My Way" covers some contempory songs "his way" in a swing/big band manner. If your a lover of differing cover versions of songs you love, then is is one for the eclectic collection. Do check out the second album Classic Songs: My Way and enjoy.

I came to this album already knowing some of Jacques Brel's songs through English translations, and I suppose I was already a sort of proxy fan. Judy Collins, Scott Walker and others popularized Brel songs in the 60's and 70's, but it was still a revelation to me when I was given a vinyl version of this album and heard them sung for the first time by the man himself. All other renditions suddenly paled in comparison with the original. Compare, for example, Terry Jacks' 'Seasons in the Sun' with 'Le Moribund', or any of the many renditions of 'If You Go Away' with 'Ne Me Quitte Pas'. No contest! There are no dud songs on this album. Some of the tunes you will recognise, and those you don't will grow on you. Brel's voice has a biting edge which is particularly ... Read More:

OK, it's 1964, and Bebop has come a long way. We are six years after Coltrane recorded Kind of Blue with Miles, and it would be another five years before Miles records the next milestone: In A Silent Way. Tunes seem to be getting longer and longer...and with A Love Supreme John Coltrane finally produces a recording that gives himself free rein to really explore the furthest recesses from seed ideas, and just go with them. This is a very spiritual album, there seem to be no constraints.
Most of the four tunes begin with a basic theme, which is quickly jettisoned as Coltrane's creative juices start to flow.
There are some astounding sections on this CD, the musicians almost seem to be jostling for position at the mic, and yet they meld organically together. ... Read More:

...........but somehow I got to hear this album in the early/mid nighties - possibly through Guru's association with the jazz guitarist Ronny Jordan who features on this disc. Jazzmatazz vol.1 and the subsequent Jazzmatazz albums seem to elevate themselves out of the regular bitching of rap and hip hop through some excellent songs with great song structure, melodies and variety. Whether this is due to Guru, who it has to be said is really 'into himself' as demonstrated by a number of self penned narratives on how good he is on both this and other jazzmatazz albums or whether it is some of the exceelent contributors that appear throughout the record. Either way he desreves credit for either creating or facilitating a number of tremendous records.

This is a cracking album and I totally agree with the other reviewer as this is a disc that is frequently in my CD player.
Although my preference would be for the other Blue Note recorded in Paris with Kenny Clarke and Bud Powell, this is a hugely enjoyable set, Dexter playing with his customary wry sense of humour and backed by a hard-hitting rythmn section. Like many other discs of the era on the Blue Note label, the recording quality is good and the standard of material is very high. No duff tracks on this one.
Dexter's style of playing with his huge, impressive tone was unique - owing something to the more Romantic players of the generation of Coleman Hawkins but taking on the harmonies and rythmns of Be-bop. This is a good introduction to one of the kings ... Read More:
