Oh what joy to have discovered again the very special talent of Ottilie! As a teenager I went to listen to her in London with The Chris Barber Band - at the time I realised what an amazing voice and talent I was listening to but only later did I realise just how good. High up there with the greats of jazz singers, and certainly with a strong hint of Bessie Smith. ENJOY!

I was so pleased to see Lanky Geordie's review... What he has managed to sum up in his review is an honest appreciation for what is a staggeringly good album. You don't need to be a Jazz intellectual to understand/appreciate/dig (man) what's going on here... you just need to open your ears and your mind. Someone a whole lot smarter than I am once said, "I don't know much about art, but I know what I like." Hmmmm... If there was a bit more of that, there would be a far wider acceptance for this type of music. Some people fear Jazz because of the elitist tag that goes with it. You'll see many people lavish superlatives on this piece of music - and with absolute justification. In my view no superlative would be over-the-top. For my part, I could say that it is sublime, superb, even peerless. But actually, I think it is other-worldly. Funk is a word which reminds me of the boring music of James Brown or the people who do all that Maggot brain funkadelic crap but this is the real thing The word was conjured up in New Orleans and means basically "sweaty". Linking up to psychedlia killed the music for me but New Orleans carried on as a major force well into the 70s when it began leasing to a Mississipi label called Malaco

The most prominent feature of this set is Gershwin's historic recordings of "Rhapsody In Blue" and "An American In Paris", but the remaining 45 tracks draw on a wide range of both American and British performers to produce a wide spectrum of classic interpretations. Whispering Jack Smith, Hutch, Jack Hylton, Roy Fox, Jack Simpson and Carroll Gibbons are all represented, as are Ella, Bing, and Billie, to name but a few. This really is a superb compilation.

This is a great bargain for a Nina Simone CD with a good collection of jazzl/blue soul tracks. I would recommend this album to everyone, music fans as well as those who want to introduce themselves to Nina Simone's songs.
