The first hit single in the U K by Ray Charles was Georgia on my mid in 1960 and this disc made No 24.Charles was on a new label by then and the Atlantic sides while issued here meant nothing until the Age of Merseybeat. Hit the road Jack went top 5 and it was nothing but up from then with the Modern Sounds of Country & Western spawning a number of hit singles. Ray's earlier work on Swingtime began apperaing on a label called Society. This CD is a pretty comprehensive overview of the most essential recordings which include his Beatles covers and ends with his version of Imagine. Clare Teal fans will probably pan me for this but having listened to most of her CDs and seen her live this really doesn't do it for me. She just changed record companies and it smacked of having to get something out quick. Sure there are some good tracks on here but the whole album doesn't fit together as well. Paridisi Carousel was a great album and this has good tracks like Get it on Sam and the cover of Moondance which stick in your mind but most of the rest didn't. Take your time Clare with the next one, put more of your own stuff in it and I am sure you will be back on form.

Saw Victoria on 'This Morning' & liked the sound of it.Love the 30s & 40s so was interested in hearing how she sounded.Victorias' voice is pretty average.I could hear The Puppini Sisters & Bette Midler in my head giving the songs that sassy edge that they needed.After listening to the album a few times I was singing along,but found myself wanting to jazz it up a bit more.A pleasant enough creation.

I have been a fan of Joe Zawinul sinse 1965, and he has provided me with a great soundtrack for my life sinse then. "75th" is not the way I would like to remember him. I would go as far as to say that, had he not died this would not have been released. Even the combination of Joe and Wayne Shorter, playing "In a silent way", falls short of what you expect from a profesional recording. If you want to hear the Syndicate at its best listen to "Vienna Nights" a far better album.

I agree with all the other reviews on the album , well nearly all . As my title says , why for Gods sake did H.Hancock and co put this has been in on what is a good listening album - but Leonard "let me open a vein to" Cohen on a Jazz album !!???? He can't sing - never could , never will , and the only reason that I can think of why he's on this album is because he's from Canada . The track is not "interesting" it's bloody awful and the producers should hang thier heads in shame .

I own several of MD's album - my personal favourite being Sketches of Spain. This album, which is rather dull, I made the mistake of buying on the basis of the track Rocker on a compilation. It's dificult to describe, but to me the sound is too undifferenciated to let the melodies and tune speak. It is an ambient album. Pleasant, but doesn't set the blood racing. Instead, buy in A Silent Way, Sketches... or Kind of Blue.....Or better yet by the Best of Blue Note Comp' - not a duff track on it

This is really a nice discovery, if you don't know Melody Gardot's tunes. I didn't know of her before listening to this, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the awful cover concealed a tight little collection of songs. The production takes up the baton from, say, Ray La Montagne or Madeleine Peyroux, if you happen to know either of those chaps, being all smoky clubs and drum brushes and minor key niceness. Though it could be said to threaten, it never drops into hokey caricature, but delivers I think an honest collection of songs, well worth repeated listening.

Heard one of the tunes from this album on the radio (it probably got the airplay courtesy of the Mercury Music Prize nomination) and was immediately hooked. The truth is, the word 'jazz' is normally enough to send a shiver of terror down my spine - but 'Knee Deep In The North Sea' is about as accessible an album as you will buy this year. Indeed, the Portico Quartet appear to have more in common with the likes of Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Ellis Island Sound than the traditional self-indulgent trillings that most will associate with the genre. This is a joyous, uplifting record that makes me want to skip about in smiley abandon, and there really aren't enough of those about.
