The Classic FM `Movie Themes' 3 CD box sets appear on a annual basis. In 2006 we had `Classic FM at the Movies', in 2007 there was the `Sequel' and now we have the 2008 `Ultimate'. The first and sequel sets were a good choice of music from popular films, the sequel making a particularly good buy because it consisted of tracks from a different selection of films than on the original. The `Ultimate' title of this latest release implies that it's either the best one or the final one, but in my opinion it's neither. It's not the best for there is a considerable overlap with the music from the previous Classic FM Movie CDs, and it probably won't be the final one of its type thanks to the vast back catalogue of film ... A 'best of' was always going to be a compromise from such a prolific artist. However, one of the really good things about this album is that it was simultaneously released on vinyl and it sounds simply magnificent. All of you that bought the CD - confine it to the car and buy a proper audio medium. Vinyl was made for Ms Krall's sublime voice. What's also great is that many of these tracks were not previously released on vinyl and to hear 'Peel me a grape' 'East of the Sun' 'Look of love' and others in their full glory is a real treat. A great album from a rare and truly talented artist, buy without hesitation. This always reminds me of (very) expensive bars, clubs and restaurants in Istanbul and Ankara where well heeled Turks would go and, well, pose I suppose (although that's never been a problem for Turkish women). So, you get the idea - this is an album 'designed' (or even destined) to be played in plush, soulless bars and clubs. It has a trippy-tango-lounge vibe going on and I do like the use of the accordion and violins and the subtle beats and electronic under current. The first three tracks are excellent, with the highlight being the opener "Queremos Paz". It's an interesting, worthwhile and inoffensive concept and should appeal to fans of the band 'Pink Martini' who, I would suggest, are non too distant cousins of Gotan Project. I'd recommend it, ... I first heard this record at a friends house. I was completely blown away. I went straight to the first record store and bought it. Since then it became my favorite Jazz album of all times, and has put Keith Jarret, in my opinion, on the top of the world's greatest piano players. I've been a fan ever since and bought every single live album he has released. They are all amazing, but there's no love like the first one. No record collection will be complete without it.

Why not match the songs of Cole Porter with Patricia Barber, one of the most thoughtful and powerful jazz vocalists working today? What a great idea! As a longtime fan of Barber's, I am delighted to see her varying her darker, more experimental work with this album. Her outstanding technical talent and understated delivery work miracles on 'standards' such as 'Miss Otis Regrets' and 'I Get a Kick out of You'. The band are in great shape too. Perfect listening as the nights start to draw in. At least that's my excuse.

A little late in the day to be sure sure but with good reason. I wasn't sure I wanted to hear it but having bought the album it then took me a good year to absorb its' wily charms. 'Shine' is a conceit of a sort you see. The languidly marvelous orchestral excesses of'Both Sides Now' (2000) and 'Travelogue' (2002) notwithstanding it has been almost a decade since the last recording of new and original material and 'Taming The Tiger' (1998) could never be seen to have been a high point in Ms Mitchell's long and illustrious career. Having 'retired' from the business of strumming and singing in 2002 her muse lay dormant for a while but we can be glad that she has set her paintbrushes ... Read More:

This has to be one of my absolute favourite albums of recent months. It's Will Holland at his absolute best. Even if you're not familiar with this man's work, I defy you not to like this!!

If you love these "black" rhythms (soul, blues, country), you will enjoy this cd; this album is very delightful, sensitive, beautiful, introspective... and personal; you can hear this album in a midnight show, with candle lights, with somebody who's in love with you in a romantic place inside and the effect will be magic... Pure "Plastic Soul, Man" (as Paul McCartney said on "Beatles Anthology 2"), I bought this album and I listened it many times without get bored... It's symply marvelous, a wonderful piece of Norah's work. Enjoy the piano, enjoy the acoustic guitars, enjoy the drums, enjoy Norah's voice...ENJOY ALL!!!

It's just arrived and the package feels like it is worth the money. I already have all the music bar a few fragments of studio sequences and the "previously released in unauthorized form" 17:28 version of So What, but for the Miles completist it's wonderful to have. Now - to sit back and luxuriate in this sublime music once again!
