Another great recording by Michel Camilo, who, by the way is from the Dominican Republic, not Puerto Rico. It seems his style can work in just about any musical situation, from classical to trio to big band, and now on this superlative recording with the beautiful flamenco guitar of Tomatito. Michel recorded an excellent buleria form piece on 'Rendezvous' (El Realejo) so his percussive, highly rhythmical yet sensitively melodic style clearly works with the passion of flamenco. Spain is the kind of album that, when you get to the end you just want to go back to the beginning and play it again, and there can be no higher praise. Highly recommended.

I had become aware of Pat Metheny from the TV screening of Joni Mitchell - Shadows and Light, when this young guy went into this guitar solo whose tone and phrasing were like nothing heard before on Earth. I had always responded to music visually and did not yet know that this condition was called synaesthesia, and to this day feel sorry for those who cannot share this experience. With Pat's solo it was like someone was painting the whole sky with a huge brush of liquid silver, accompanied by a feeling of utter tenderness and compassion. (No drugs, honest)

Soon after, a friend of mine tracked down this album, Travels, and my first hearing was of the majestic opening track, Are you Going With Me? surging from his open attic window, ... Read More:

Music : Latin Breakbeats Basslines and Boogaloo Vol.2: Freak Off
I was in a music store in Edinburgh when I heard this music wafting up the stairs from the vinyl section. It was like one of those cartoon moments where I was carried down the stairs by my ears. I stood enraptured listening to it swaying side to side to a sound I had never heard before. I just knew this was something amazingly special I had never been to carnival or Latin America but it felt like I was there. I had to have this album and they didn't have it on CD so when we got back to Glasgow I found it and purchased it at some ridiculous price, but it was so worth it. The opening Pete Rodriguez track 'Oh That's Nice' starts you off in the party mood and it doesn't fail you through to Tito Puente's frenetic 'Para Los Ruberos'. It comes out at ... Read More:
